Default Thieves with real stealing skills

    Hey all!

This is the first thread I ever start, so please bear with me. Having played my fair share of games, I've noticed how there's almost always a "thief" class. However, it's just as seldom that the thieves can actually steal! I really like games where you can focus on other things than combat, so I'm wondering what thieves do you know that have stealing skills?

Pls don't post if you didn't bother to read what I asked about. This thread is NOT about goodlooking thief classes or awesome combat skills or best dagger or whatever. It's all about stealing.

For me, the only ones that come to mind are:

    FallOut Online : 2238

Used to have a really useful stealing skill. You could steal from both NPCs and other players. This meant that if you stood around in town the thieves would steal everything you had on you except for your weapon and armour. The kickback was that the thieves became so hated they got killed on sight outside of town, which really made the life as a thief to be full of cheap thrills and dangers. It was awesome, but since the non-thieves were annoyed they unfortunately nerfed the skill into oblivion, thereby removing the thief class from the game..

    Runescape

Since I've never subbed for the game I don't know exactly how the stealing concept is integrated, so apologies for any mistakes. As far as I know, stealing if a seperate skill. However, in keeping with Runescape's carebear attitude, you can only steal from NPCs. It does seem like a very well developed and interesting concept!

So does anyone know of any other games where stealing is possible? From NPCs or other players?
If you do, please write a line or two about how the concept has been developed! =)

Not sure if you are looking for F2P, if not then Ultima Online might be your choice even though it's a pretty old game (I would suggest a... *cough cough* server to be honest). You can pretty much look inside other player's and NPCs backpacks and if your Stealing skill is good enough, you can take items without them noticing (there's also a skill that puts you in Stealth). If you fail they will notice and in the case of NPCs they will call the guards.

    Final Fantasy Tactics.

Steal in fft can steal just about everything from a enemy, to learn it you must equip a weapon that has the steal skill and use it to master it so that it saves it to your ability list.

    Steal:Armor | Rondell Dagger |200 AP|A| Steal enemy's armor
    Steal:Shield | Scramasax |200 AP|A| Steal enemy's shield
    Steal:Access | Jambiya |300 AP|A| Steal enemy's accessory
    Steal:Helm | Kard |100 AP|A| Steal enemy's helmet
    Steal:Weapon | Sword Breaker |300 AP|A| Steal enemy's weapon
Steal:Gil | Jack Knife |100 AP|A| Steal Gil from an enemy
Steal:EXP | Khukuri |100 AP|A| Steal EXP from an enemy
Steal:JP | Orichalcum |200 AP|A| Steal JP from an enemy
Steal:Ability| Cinquedea |300 AP|A| Steal an ability from an enemy

grinding is required to master every steal skill >

imagine a online version of fft... stealing the most valuable weapon from an enemy QQQQ

Ragnarok has this "Steal" implemented on their thief class. The skill only applies to PvM which excludes Boss monsters.

Everquest have/had a steal skill, not sure if it's still implented these days. Well if I am to be correct I think it was called Pickpocket, and it let you steal various coins and such from NPC's. Im not sure if it works on other players on the PvP server since I never played there, sorry.

The OP has a good point. Most thieves in game are nothing but a cheap assasin with mostly attack skills. Where're the ones with lockpicking, steal and stealth?
The closest game I've found so far is Morrowind/Oblivion, but that's a single player game.

You could try Dungeons and Dragons Online, where the Rogue class has lockpicking, stealth and trap disarming (unfortunately, they can't steal).

The Thieves in ShadowBane had all those skills, you could steal from anybody

Dofus has weapons that can steal money from other players and the Thief/Assassin class Srams have a skill that steals money from monsters/players.

They nerfed Con (the money stealing skill) some time ago. Now you can only steal from monsters, and not players

Judging from the OP's post, it sounds like unless you can steal everything another player has, effectively making all his playing time that day completely useless, it's not worth it.

Thanks for all the nice replies! If I am to make a quick list of the suggestions you've made so far, I guess here goes: (hope I didn't forget any)

FalloutOnline:2238 - Complete extreme almost gamebreaking stealing
Runescape - Stealing from NPCs evolved into complex skill
Ultima Online - Good stealing from both NPCs and players
Shadowbane - Had very evolved stealing from players, but game closed down
Ragnarok - Stealing from NPCs (except bosses)
Everquest - Used to have stealing but current status unknown
Mortal Online - Does have stealing?
DDO - No stealing, but other thief skills
WoW - Stealing from NPCs and also other thief skills
Dofus - Stealing from NPCs (used to have stealing from players, but got nerfed)
Final Fantasy Tactics - Not an mmo, but still nice with all suggestions

That is your choice. I don't expect to like everything you like either so please don't troll threads you're not interested in to get your post count up.

    >_<

Please don't make up straw-man arguments for the sake of trolling. My original question was to examine how the concept of stealing is integrated in mmorpgs. Like I said, I'm interested in different ways of playing instead of grinding in combat. If it doesn't interest you please make a thread about something that do instead of trying to make this into something it's not!

FFXI also has a thief class that can steal. They also raise the chance for rare items to drop from monsters too (by a bit).

Sorry. Acronyms get the best of players. What I meant was you could steal from monsters with the exception of bosses. NPCs can't really be targeted or effected by any skill.

Ragnarok has one of the best steal mechanics. Yes, they can steal from mobs but they can also use divest or strip in PvP which comes in a variety of forms strip armor, weapon, helmet, accessory, shield. It does not actually steal items but it gives players a temporary, and very annoying debuff which removes their item and disallows them from re-equipping it for the duration of the debuff. It's very neat, there are entire builds devoted to stripping.

    Some other games:
Ofcourse FFXI. You can steal items ofcourse but a high lvl passive allows you to steal the enemy's buffs as well. Also Treasure Hunter passive gives them and their party higher drop rates.

Silkroad online: another interesting thieving mechanic in this game focusing more on pvp. Any class can choose to be a thief by profession(different from job classes), thieves can pk players who chose merchant as their profession. Merchants caravan items from city to city to sell them for higher prices, thieves pk them, steal their loot and sell it themselves. Another chooseable profession, guardians are basically thief killers who protect merchants.
