Default Do MMO's have to be revolutionary?

I'm beginning to ponder if a new mmo really needs to be shockingly revolutionary anymore to be good. So many times in the past few years new games have come out that claims to be revolutionary (FFXIV, APB, Warhammer and ect.) that have fallen flat on their face because the developers have simply made poor choices in attempting to change something that does need to be changed. This leads to the issue were I noticed across many sites and not just OnRPG that it is automatically labeled as generic. World of Warcraft and Rift more recently have been labeled as this because this do not try to revolutionize the wheel, but simply improve upon what works.

To simply put does a game have to be revolutionary for it to be fun and keep you around for a long period of time?

For myself I've played WoW for 6 years along with other games, and I plan on playing Rift hardcore because they simply work and I'm sick of the revolutionary games that simply don't work. I found over the long term that playing a game that is good in all aspects and not trying to excel in one is what has kept me around. Games like Warhammer for example tried to excel in purely PvP, but couldn't keep me around in the PvE part of the game because it was poorly implemented. Where as WoW focused on having both good PvE and PvP experiences that did not introduce something revolutionary, they just simply worked.

TLDR: Read the damn post you slacker.

of course they don't people do not like change.

not only that but it doesn't help that developers try to change stuff for the extremely casual audience which doesn't need to be changed but usually ends up breaking the entire point of a mmorpg. which is character progression, and socializing. the thing most mmo's that have been coming out and failing lack these days is long term/hardcore progression and group based content. most company's are trying to balance it to where that person who logs in and plays for 30 mins to an hour is on the same exact level as the guy who plays 6-10 hours a day.

so personally i don't think its that games need to be revolutionary, i just think they need to focus on interesting, fun and challenging endgame content. thats the only reason i stick with wow, no other game has the same level of competitive and challenging endgame content.

It has to fulfill what it promised, and a little extra 10% in order for me to stay. Much like you said, the game hooks you generally by improving on whats already there. This mentality follows the same thing but allows the game itself to set the bar.

Umm, I guess we could go back to that Star Trek: TOS thing where Scotty would always overestimate how long it took to repair something so Kirk could be happy when he finished it sooner. The game has to go that 110%.

Revolutionary no, evolutionary yes. We don't actually want to tread the same exact thing every game.

The problem is more people don't know what they want.

They say they want something with x,y,z but when a game contains everything they are expecting they don't play it or don't show interest.

If people really wanted something different, they would stop comparing every game to WoW since apparently it is such a generic game.

Not to mention all this obsessing over visuals, which is probably the biggest reason alot of games aren't very interesting, If there was more focus on gameplay and repeatability we wouldn't really be even having this discussion.

Players and developers need to focus less on polished turds and more on what matters in the end, gameplay.

I personally don't care if it's revolutionary, but even if a game is the same as it's predecessors I'd like it to do what they do better.

Right now yes all we are getting now is the same shit with a different name and graphics. I haven't played an MMO avidly in ages and every time I try a new MMO it's the same crap in a different package. So yes as of now I do think we need something revolutionary to wake up the MMO world.

There are certain formulas that have been proven to work every time yet the concept isn't revolutionary at all.

Take for example cartoony racing games that emulate Mario Kart like Kart Rider or Transpee (RIP). They hardly deviate from the original concept, yet they are capable of gathering a somewhat stable player base. Why? Because cartoony racing games are fun, plain and simple. That attracts a lot of players, casual or not.

For me no. I just require a decent flow of updates, and for the games leveling system to be fun sometimes... as thats what you will be doing most of the time.

While they don't have to be, well done "revolutionary" games are ALWAYS welcome in my eyes.

actually a lot of the mmo's coming out in the past year have been completely new and different. mainly involving real time combat, sadly they have all been failing pretty hard on release.
