    Default FFS Canada...

    http://openmedia.ca/meter

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are about to impose usage-based billing on YOU.

This means we're looking at a future where ISPs will charge per byte, the way they do with smart phones. If we allow this to happen Canadians will have no choice but to pay MUCH more for less Internet. Big Telecom companies are obviously trying to gouge consumers, control the Internet market, and ensure that consumers continue to subscribe to their television services.

These Big Telecom companies are forcing small competing ISPs to adopt the same pricing scheme, so that we have no choice but to pay these punitive fees.

This will crush innovative services, Canada's digital competitiveness, and your wallet.

We urgently need to send a clear message to Ottawa, saying that we won't stand by while some of the most profitable companies in the country indiscriminately add new fees to our Internet bills. Enough is enough.

UPDATE: The CRTC just made a decision that paves the way for new internet fees to be added to your bill. To stop this we need to raise our voices now more than ever.
TL:DR, Canada is going to have nationwide pay per gig usage for the internet because TV is losing out.

If there is ANY political party (Communist, Nazi, a pack of wolves who only have free internet and eating babies as their platform) that will abolish this, I'll vote for them, and never vote conservative ever again.

Apparently, a similar plan was suggested to a senator, and he replied, "What do you think this is, Canada?"

We'll take 10 of those please.

We're not really independent as we still kind of follow the Queen. But whatever.

On-topic: Just out of curiosity, how much do people from USA pay? I've never really compared, :O

The 1982 thing always reminds me of the whole "Canadians didn't burn down the white house in 1812." Just like we weren't really in the second world war.

Canada was in WWII? Was Tim Horton on the front lines bringing coffee and timbits?

Just when I thought we couldn't get more screwed over in Canada. We already pay up the arse for "high speed" and they already slapped usage limits, most of which are outrageous.

I had switched ISPs before to avoid limits but now it will be forced with them all.

The problem is there are only two main companies here in Ontario. Bell and Rogers.

Bell runs the DSL, Rogers runs the cable internet. All other ISPs in Ontario (my region at least) are just using the lines of Rogers and Bell. Bell and Rogers already have limits on all their plans, and they're quite low as well. (About 100GB a month for the high priced plans.)

Because of this law, all ISPs will be forced to have limits.

This is dumb, this is forcing a cartel upon smaller companies which should pretty much be illegal.

Companies making their price higher together to force consumers to buy at a higher price instead of competing to offer the best deal is illegal.

Now there is a law actually forcing them to make their prices higher so the smaller companies can't compete with bigger ones by offering nice deals ? What kind of consumer society is this ?

This is utterly stupid, but sadly, I don't know enough words in english to explain my opinion in details...

pretty much everyone is reeling back at this ******ed plan.
though elections is around the corner for us so there's still hope.

also seems like the conservatives have had a much larger part in this than it seems:

    http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r254...e-CRTC-s-fault

as in they actually encouraged the passing of this bill in support of Bell/Rogers.
at least from how i see it (and a ton of others).

Hmm, if you find me a link of parties saying that they'll abolish it (Communist is fine) lemme know.
