Help with banner printing

If i want to print a banner at the size of lets say, a whiteboard. Must the design/pictures on the pc be as big as the whiteboard to be printed perfectly?? or they have some sort of special printing hardware?

Just cut the piece into a bunch of shapes that fit on a regular sheet. Then, just cut and tape it all together.

If you're planning to print it at kinko's or something then design it using a vector format. That way you can scale it without lost, just use illustrator or flash.
