Default African souls trapped inside 3DS.

A Facebook movement is getting a lot of attention for its plans to boycott the Nintendo 3DS. The group posits that the 3DS is made from "conflict mineral" -- material mined in the Congo by oppressed workers led by armed rebel groups.

The scheme has been hatched by a representative of the Enough Project, a group dedicated to fighting human rights abuses and genocide. According to the spokesman, Nintendo is "allowing people to die and suffer grave human rights abuses for the sake of video game console production."

"What I am asking you to do is to refuse to buy a Nintendo 3DS system until Nintendo announces plans to halt use of conflict minerals in production -- and this can only happen through monitoring of trade systems," states the group. "I am not in any way opposed to the 3DS itself -- I actually think it's one of the coolest things I've never seen in person. But I am not going to be one of the millions who looks the other way purely for entertainment, and I hope you will join me."

It seems that quite a few gamers who joined the group aren't exactly steadfast comrades, having answered the call with vitriolic rejoinders: "Sure, whining like a ****** is cool and all, but seriously. Get the sticks out of your asses, kiddo', a few lost sales isn't going to do Nintendo any."

Seems weird to me that the 3DS is being picked on when there are likely thousands of things that could be accused, but I guess it's all about what gets attention. What about you? Do you agree that Nintendo should be punished for possibly funding human rights abuse? Or do you accept this as a sad fact of capitalism in which the poor must exist for there to be wealth? More importantly ... how excited are you for Nintendogs?

I don't care. Nintendo may be allowing people do die, the very same as you and I are letting them die.

Clearly the armed rebel groups aren't under the enployment of nintendo. They are buying said mineral from a 3rd party, how the 3rd party is run really isn't nintendos business.

The 3DS could be killing babies and it would still sell like hotcakes.

Man, I was hoping for some voodoo stuff where they thought it kept their souls inside as 3D images.

    Total let down.

Same. Something like, "Hold it like this and you can see their ghostly faces!".

They're like conflict diamonds. Honestly, this is a horrible problem that's going on in Africa, but to boycott only Ninty is the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

Why don't they also boycott their computer makers, their TV and cellphone makers along with most other major electronics companies. It's because they need their computers and cellphones whereas they don't need the 3DS, so they don't say anything.

    I hate hypocrites like them...

most of the major companies of the world are exploiting people from poor countries in one way or another.

not that that makes it alright, but targeting nintendo in particular seems ridiculous.

Seriously? FPS on handhelds is like playing crappy 2D JRPGs on the PS3...Oh wai-.

But haha they should call it Conflict Material FarmVille! It would be big on Facebook. You get Africans to go dig up stuff and then when they die you harvest their souls and you use that to buy better equipment.

    She knows how to party.

I thought it was gonna be something like "if you play your 3DS at 2:28 in the morning and set the 3D to maximum, you can see their ghostly faces pop out at you in glorious 3D."

    :o
