Rift is just LOTRO/Warhammer with rifts instead of the unique things that those games offered. I'm pretty sure they use the same game engine. All 3 of the games are awful, though.
Don't get me wrong, World of Warcraft is a very shallow game, but it at least has an excellent engine, support, and playerbase.
