I don't think they are making him out to be a monster, and I don't really think it's backfiring either.

Charlie is clearly in a free fall, and being clean and sober doesn't make him fit for work. He is unstable.

It's not the partying. I remember when he publicly 1st went to rehab and Martin spoke about it on TV.

Charlie has lost it. I don't know if the partying and drugs finally caught up to him or what, but he's snapped and I don't think you can glue a Charlie Sheen back together again.
