Default What's the most Prevelant MMO/MMORPG theme?

It's a little weird but this was brought up a few days ago when I was playing Dynasty Warriors (we had a really long wait before a match) and I've been curious ever since. What really IS an original MMO/MMORPG anymore?

More specifically, what specific Theme exists in the most MMOs out there today?

I thought about it for a while and I originally though Medieval/Rennaissance was probably the most prevelant...but I'm starting to wonder there are a lot of Fantasy, Sci Fi, etc. MMO's coming out and some older MMOs are starting to take a turn into a new theme.

So what do you guys think is the most common MMO theme out there? List a few games you see it in too btw, I'm really curious what you other addicts think :3...okay fine the moderates too >.>

I think we can say that the most obvious common theme is "Fantasy". Elves, orcs, dwarfs, etc. Then it actually probably gets hard, because to be honest there arent a ton of other types.

Sci-fi would probably be the one right up next to fantasy :/.

fantasy can be broken up into millions of sub categories you know xD

    Fantasy-horror (requiem)
    Fantasy-Medeival (runescape)
    Fantasy-Rennaissance (a lot)
    etc. etc.

so what SPECIFIC theme is most prevalent. Fantasy is just a category of millions of themes

sub catagories are still part of the main one, ergo they still count towards fantasy.

personally i think it's shooters, they're over saturating the market.

Pretty simple actually, have a hostile world where monster are threatening the towns and you need to go kill X of them.

Historical Heritage. I've seen at least a thousand Chinese MMORPGs about old stories that are of course exaggerated.

    She knows how to party.

If you must know: Here Lies Wikipedia

Whoa!! *eye-seizure* I can be an ELF!
    Bro.
    Brooooo!
    Look @ my
    EARS

What do ears even have to do with elves? Oh he has long ears therefore he lives in a tree? To be exact. MMORPGs have taken-on a Tolkien-esque theme.

I love it. It is my favourite trope.
But please tell me if you see another.

Well there are three most prevalent MMO themes
First one is set in medieval times with some fantasy settings usually with magic, races, and weird civilizations. Story is about world coming to an end, or it looks like it is, but then something happens, new heroes are born (you), and you struggle in a fight against evil. It seems that all is lost, but it's not thanks to you and your group in an instance
Second one is set pretty much in the same setting (swords, magic, races), but instead of you fighting with evil, you get the choice. The choice differs of course on a game but it's usually either nation, faction or side (good/evil). Story is mostly about an endless war between nations/factions/sides, but then something happens, new heroes appear (you), and you can lead your side to win.
Third one is much less common and it's hard to put it the way I put the first two. However, MMO's based on the third most prevalent theme are based on certain mythologies, beliefs or variations of these of ancient civilizations.
Examples - Gods & Heroes - Roman mythology
    Mabinogi - Celtic mythology
    Perfect World - Chinese mythology.
Can't think of anymore MMOs based on mythologies tho.
