And they are free to do that if they want, but they more than likely won't. They aren't doing a full 100% revamp of everything, they're turning the clock back several years to bring the characters more in-line with a modern audience. It's possible they're doing this to make Comic books more appealing to a wider audience.
Changing the costumes would be a start in doing that as it might be easier to relate to characters that don't look like a pack of skittles.
