    Default Is this legal.

I don't know how law differences are in the US and The Netherlands, but I have a question.

Say someone has a job where he has access to information of all residents of a country, information being address, age, name, marital status and stuff like that, and can check up everything when he is on for example the PC.

Now, can you look up at this information in your spare time for example, you want to look up information on your neighbors and you work at a bailiff office, can you legally look up the information without having the orders or any kind of case going on?

I don't know how to explain any better, but I'd appreciate it if someone told me if this was legal or not.

You're not supposed to, but I guarantee people still do.

Yes, I know people do, but what I want to know is if this is legal or not.

Cant see it being ethically correct. And i doubt any info you find is allowed to leave the office.

Just ask yourself -- Would you want someone doing that to you and posting all that info out to the webs or someone?

and that would classify as stalking to me.

It's not legal. It's like if your a cop and you just walk into someones garden to see what he's doing. You can do it, but it's not allowed.

It's legal if you don't get caught.

No, I don't want or need to do this, I'm just wondering because I heard someone talking about knowing a lot about my friend and checking about his information and such.

Illegal? Probably not, unless you use that information to commit another crime. But it would most likely be against the employer's policies and rules.

Like everyone else said it's probably not illegal unless you use it for malicious purposes. But if you got caught doing it you'd probably get fired/privileges revoked. Just use it wisely and don't get caught snooping around.

Its only illegal if there's evidence to prove it.
