yeah i saw a guy on youtube using that firespell, its pretty cheasy looking, the funny thing is the guy hit the shopkeeper with it by mistake and got killed :P (he seems like a pretty cool LP'er though)

im trying out an archer (about to be level 8, almost done clearing floor 2) right now so i only have crossbow mastery as a weapon skill, but even with it maxed out and using tinkerer? to make bolts out of ores its still not enough to play like a archer/ranged character, i have to buy bolts from bolt machines and use melee a lot

the character is going nicely though, assassination helps me do damage with weapons im not trained for well enough ,the tinkerer skill to remove traps from the ground is awesome and burglary has some nice survival (i got lucky and found a 4 star mace on the 1st floor) i have not picked up the last burglary skill "five finger discount" because im afraid ill get caught by the shopkeeper and die, i don't know how it works yet and i don't wanna throw away my character over it

i think ill be ok for now but i wonder how ill do enough damage on floor 4 (if i live that long), ill need to find a better weapon and i hope the last skill in assassination helps cause im going to need it,right now im trying to do all my sidequests to see if i can get something nice (i got a nice chest piece to help me tank in melee so far)

Finished my first run today on the middle difficulty, not sure how long it took because my first two chars were lost due to crashing.

Games extremely fun though, Lord Dredmor battle was a bit underwhelming I went invisible and took the first stairs down to floor 10 and there he was, I just tossed all my best ranged stuff I was saving and he died before even getting near me.

I get a feeling though after tomorrows patch he'll be able to cast spells so that'll make him a challenge.

*edit*@chris183 getting higher lvs in tinkerer allows you to make more bolts per ore, alternatively you can find gear with + to tinkerer like the tinkerer goggles.

thanks for the info about tinkerer,i wish i had known that earlier

update: got level 8 and took 5 finger discount skill, stole a good sword got to floor 3 and enchanted it, got 1 melee power and 1 dodge but i got "it roots your enemies to the ground" in gold text i don't know if it actually does root them yet though

edit: son of a *****, i died because there was a shop on floor 3 with some sword worth 26k (white lion something) and i tried to steal it and got caught, i tried to go invisible but his demons where blocking every path out, so i tried a potion of teleport and it teleports me inside the same room, so i used my move in a mysterious way to teleport to brax and try to run out and they where even outside the room, i knew this would happen but it was fun anyway

that character was really good, if i did it again i would just take a main weapon mastery over crossbow and maybe take something over dead shot or whatever it is

Sucks man, not much experience with the skill I stopped leveling burglary @ 3 by the end of the game I had over 100k and had already purchased Self-Righteous Sword of White Lies and Angsty Blade of the Anti-Hero which cost a ton so didn't have much need of stealing though I could see it helping out early on if you can get away with it.

    Oh and

One important tip I can give everyone is watch out for cursed traps and monsters, I had to learn the hard way that they can give permanent negative stats on your equipment, ruined four weapons before I figured out what was causing it, freaking removed the regen I had on one of my swords so I was pissed. The items can be turned to unusable unless you have the skill This Translation is All Wrong! but even then that skill is likely to just re-roll other negative effects rather than remove them.

I really want to get into roguelikes, but like the other guy said the ascii is kind of a put off. They all seem to have incredibly steep learning curve, like you have to learn another language before you can even play/enjoy the game. Gave dwarf fortress a try a long time ago for a good 3hours, to this day no clue what i even did or achieved.

How is this game? I always support indie game developers and was thinkin of trying this out.

(that stone soup game sounds interesting too! =o )

stonesoup is a pretty damn hard roguelike from my understanding (its also one of the most popular roguelikes), ive played it quite a bit and never gotten very far in the game, its a fun game and not that hard to pick up the basics (there are some hotkeys) but get ready for lots and lots of death

other free ones with graphics off the top of my head are Powder,ToME,LambdaRogue,Elona, nethack,CastlevaniaR L and IVAN

(there's a lets play of powder on youtube that's pretty awesome)

but i think dungeons of dredmor is probably better for someone new to roguelikes because the buttons are easier (you don't have to learn tons of hot keys) and the game is really easy to pick up and play, the only problems i have with it so far is the inventory bag is a little small (probably intended) and they need to do some bugfixes (i only crashed once out of 30 hours of gameplay, the rest is just skill tweaks i think), but i have already put tons of hours into it in the past few days trying different builds and learning what things do and i have already got my 4.50$ worth for sure, i definitely recommend it

    Very handy page www.dredmorwiki.com/wiki/Equipment

Can check effects on food & drink and stuff and check out equipment stats before you craft.

i bought that douls sword or whatever it was for 46k it took me along time to save up but man it was worth it (sold some shield called shield of caketown (or something) for 5k), im hitting monsters for about 60 dmg, i could do more if i get lucky with krong i have archaeology too, but im still using that dagger in my other hand for the stealth bonus (currently at 50 stealth i can mostly walk up beside stuff without being noticed on floor 5) i don't think ill switch unless i find another really nice sword

now i just have to play smart!, i still get hit pretty hard

    Default Dungeons of Dredmor

Those of you who have steam, or even those of you who don't and like RPGs (roguelikes specifically)...get this game NOW. It's only $4.5 and it's the best bang for your buck since TF2.

It is /really/ good. It reminds me of when I used to be gooked on ADOM and Crawl back in my Roguelike days. Though... The UI in this game is much better. MUCH BETTER. I also like the being able to play what feels like a roguelike without the ASCII graphics - those got tiresome after awhile.

Something neat I thought I'd like to share with you guys. If you get an item with conflagration resistance, hover your mouse over it to find a direct reference to Dwarf Fortress, another game based off roguelikes (I don't consider it a roguelike, myself). At the bottom of the description it mentions "Strange Moods"--one of the features in Dwarf Fortress. Lol.

It's also a very humorous game...I don't remember when I last laughed at the item descriptions.
