The media has made it a big thing over the years as well as violence and crime in general. Racial issues are pretty big in my town and people have been dying over gang shit literally every week as far as I can remember and it's only getting worse (not that long ago our library had bullet holes in the windows). Our country has had race relation problems since day one though so it's really not all that surprising. Let's not forget how this country was founded in the first place.
