I usually say Friend or bro if the person is around your age.

if theyre older, I will say sir or misses.

    like that?

Not exactly the same but depending on the context it might fit: protégé? After all if you are mentoring someone it means they respect your experience and knowledge.

    An admirer, perhaps?

Yeah, though no one sure as hell knew what you were talkin about just now : 3.

Title: What would/should you call someone

    Fixed.

But yeah unless you specify an age difference including whos older and what not you won't be getting much help. Usually people make up their own stuff though kind of.

I don't know how them UK peeps do their thang but in amurica usually you wouldn't call something a certain word if they respect you aside from their name unless they're very close with you relationship wise. I also dunno if you actually mean if they look up to you but meh...which is a phrase people use for that if someone is younger than you and they try to follow your example and all that shet.

well in the uk, it depends on where you are from, in manchester, we say Mate, and a few places say this, but the rich folks over in chester probably say something else.

Really, I understood it perfectly the moment I read it though.
No matter how you look at it, it says "how do you call someone who respects you?", not "how do you call someone you respect?".
    Vital difference.

I agree, "Admirer" is a good word. "Fan" also works, if it's gone far enough =P
"Follower", or "disciple" might work too.

Don't wanna start an argument, and this isn't aimed at anyone in particular - but after having spent a lot of time abroad and on the internet, I've seen so many native English speakers who're completely shit at English.
So, more than being a native speaker, I think people's education, lifestyles etc, have more impact on language skill.
If you don't spend time reading, challenging your language etc, you'll be shit no matter where you're born.

then he would want advice on how to talk to them on the phone or something. You say it makes sense but your response to how he phrased it doesnt make sense. We can infer what he wants, but it doesnt make 'perfect' sense.

he made it sound like he was having trouble calling someone who admired him on the phone.

i was about to make a response on how to call someone without being nervous or awkward. I understand hes foreign so i went with my second option on what he wanted which is usually right for me, but....

Oh, my bad I didn't know a good thread title so I just split it in two in the hope that people would understand.

    My apologies.
