You can't do music as a side thing for earning money. You lose more then you earn in the beginning. Some make it, and they earn everything back and even more, but the other 90% that doesn't make it lose a lot of money, and get little in return.

umm yes u can lol. You only lose money if you're still acquiring gear or spend what you make off of your shows directly on gear. You get money for playing shows and venues, not rockstar money but it's good pocket money. that's where if you're smart you develop a DIY sense, use your connections, sell your merch and demos where you play and boom. Also, BandCamp can make you good money, very DIY, and you profit directly.

And please, it's a very expensive and time consuming hobby but you dont LOSE that MUCH money. You can play live and make it with shitty gear :|. You only go broke if you're on a shitty indie label, borrow too much money for advertising or recording and/or you or your manager are just bad at managing money.

My friend is extremely talented, like seriously talented. She has an AMAZING voice, like those soulful beautiful voices that makes your chin drop. She's got connections on the music business, she does live gigs and sells out shows over the country and i'm not talking county fair shows, she and her band sold out one of the country's main concert halls last month I went to see her.

However she's aware it's a doggy dog world the music business especially for jazz, soul and blues artists, instead she like myself wants to pursue a career in Law.

on second thought i am 19 living alone working and my parents still manage to tell me what to do in life ... they say i start thinking about life for once ... and hey u know what i say ... "Yes that is why i am living alone , playing for my bills , food and working my *** off 5 - 6 days a week ..." but ofcourse they think they are right and not me ... well if i would say it i would say i am still playing with life doing shit ... working and they spending money with friends , playing games ... only major thing i accomplished is that i am taveling around the world ...
