If nobody replies ask Xeno and kait0s (I always spell his name wrong, but you'll know what I mean.)

Dont let anyone tell you there's some sort of rulebook to follow. Thats dumb.

Its your pictures for a reason. Do it your way. Not some dick who heard how to do it from his high school teacher. I personally dont believe i know the "right" way to do it. I just do it my way, and i enjoy it. Im always looking at new ways to take pictures. Always asking for advice.(Asking isnt taking, kids) Just like with everything, progression takes time. The more time spent with your camera, the better off you are.

Art evolves, just like everything else.

I enjoy looking thru others peoples lens because mainly its not thru mine. I like to see how other people take pictures of the same thing i took. Its fun

Honestly, im sorta curious of what camera you got. You said, dslr. I own a Canon T2i and a Sony nex 5. And i havent touched my t2i in months. The sony nex 7 is out really soon and i plan on selling both my cameras for it.

If youre interested, i can link you to my deviant/shutter urls so you can dive a bit into my pictures.

Get at me, good to see more photographers.

Nice what kind of DSLR I want one but they cost a pretty penny. Just start taking pictures and learning that's best way to go in any art form. I have an easy share max and it's fun to just go around taking pictures and seeing what comes out.
Also remember it takes a lot of pictures before you get the right shot. This is why I love digital cameras analog cameras are cool but even with machines developing pictures can be a pain not to mention they are being phased out. Looks online there are plenty of sites and even podcasts that will help you out if you are willing to learn.

@kait0s my dad had a canon eos t3i that he just won from something, which he handed to me, so i do use that, but its too big and cumbersome to carry around. i've got one of those compact things, a Olympus E-PL1, what you'd call a midway between compact and DSLR, got it on a pretty good deal.

Yeah, i just started taking random shots of stuff i think is pleasing to the eye. Thing is, i've no idea what aperture, shutter speed, iso etc do. well, ok i do know what they are and stuff, just dunno how to manipulate them manually instead of using the auto feature. im going for the workshop in a couple of months, but was thinking of getting into it before hand.

Yeah, im thinking of starting a flikr/shutter myself actually.

Some fundamental understanding of the concepts of visual composition will help very much as well.

Rule of thirds (which is really not a rule)
    Handling the depth of subject(s)
    Managing foreground and background
    etc
