free games like Achaea or Midkemia Online?
Hi everyone, I've been playing Achaea for over 10 years now and while it's probably the best, most in-depth and character-customizable roleplaying experience I've EVER played, I could use a new game to suck up my life. I'd like a game that has features similar to Achaea, such as;
-Real time PvP with afflictions and cures, no turn-based crap
-Highly customizable character
-Deep roleplaying community
The only games I've found that come close are Midkemia Online and Aetolia. Any suggestions?

Text games are fun because your brain creates better graphics than any videogame in the world. And the roleplaying is ALOT better in text games. If you try to roleplay in World of Warcraft people will laugh at you, and in the end you are just playing a 3D game where your character looks like everyone else, except maybe with different hair or a different color beard.Originally Posted by CoccoDrillo
In text games you can type what you want your character to look like so even if its just "reading", it is alot deeper creating a character in text games then creating a character in WoW.

Istaria, Mount & Blade: Warband Persistent World mod, Mount & Blade: Warband The Wild Wind mod, Star Wars galaxies (going down) are all awesome games for role play, in my experience.
Istaria is a lot more text-heavy (I mean essay-length emotes to describe how they picked up a cup from a table and took a drink from it). It's 3D and is a high-fantasy game with a tight-knit community, years of content, and crap-loads of tools to make your game-play and role play more enjoyable. Istaria basically has NO PvP, though. The only PvP (besides PvP that is role played, some people just don't fight at all and just RP it out, but some take it a step-further and adopt a DnD sort of combat system) is in the "arena".
Mount & Blade: Warband Persistent World mod is a mod that is built for medieval-role-play-goodness, and I am an admin on the most popular NA role play server, and the RP community is awesome. Open-PvP and you can do whatever you want, basically, as long as you role play.
Mount & Blade: Warband The Wild Wind mod is a mod made for role play, as well. But introduces a lot of sandbox elements PW mod doesn't have. Also, it's set in the "Wild West" period of the West United States. Imagine M&B Combat meets Minecraft crafting and building meets Red Dead Redemptions setting. All wrapped up in Role Play goodness. I also admin for the most popular NA role play server for that mod. Open-PvP and you can do whatever you want, basically, as long as you role play.
Star Wars Galaxies is amazing if you enjoy the Star Wars setting. Because of the rich lore, history, and story development behind the Star Wars title, there is no end to content. And the devs did their best to make sure players had all the tools they'd need to make their own adventures come to life.
From the "Story Teller" system that let players place down props, use special affects, spawn NPC's for combat, or just for "flavor" (came with many, many AI settings). You could have the NPCs drop loot, could set their level, etc... The effects range from persistent spark or fire effects you can place on any of the props, to Rebel/Imperial bomber runs that pulverized the very ground you stood on.
To the "Quest master" (forgot the real name) system that let you create your own quest to share with friends. These could give money, items (I think), and experience points as rewards. You could create quest just as deep and in-depth as the ones that the developers made. I believe you could even create quest chains. I never really messed with this to much. I was a "Story teller" guy.
Plus there were the wide-variety of houses that had fully customizable interiors (you could drop ANY items you had in your house and use it as decorations. There was a whole craft profession that was centered around making furniture, paintings, and other things to decorate houses. Hundreds upon hundreds of stuff + all of the loot you got from fighting or quest).
All that plus all the PvE-quest content AND all the PvP content. In the end, SWG was able to completely blend the PvE-content and PvP content. You could strictly focus on PvE, or on PvP, or both, and all the while you'd still be helping and playing with other people. An example is the invasion events. These were partially-regularly timed events that were held in the major cities (part of the galactic civil war...don't get me started on the territorial control....). Crafters, entertainers, and combat toons all had a part. These were PvE-PvP events and you could take part in just the PvE, or take part in Just the PvP, or both. You could be set to special forces (open world PvP mode), and your buddy could be combatant (only attack-able by opposing faction NPCs), and you'd both be fighting in the same battle, having the same fun.
And the Role Play in that game was so awesome. The game offered probably hundreds of fully-animated and detailed emotes. As well as a function make custom text emotes if you needed. Entire servers dedicated themselves to Role Play. That's thousands (and later on in its life, hundreds) of people all working for awesome role play.
I just made myself a bit depressed. It's bullcrap that the game is going down in December :/ Damn SWTOR.
