Hey OnRPG, it's been a long time, but I really want to know something:

League of Legends

LoL is the most popular game in NA?!

I laughed at that when I saw it. I was quitting games when the LoL vs HoN beta phases were just coming out. Never tried either of them because never seemed like my style of game-play.

Saw that email and wondered, "How could they have $5Million dollars to spend on a contest?" Must of been a joke I thought; until, I did a quick XFIRE scan to see THIS MADNESS:

LoL is now more popular then World of Warcraft?!

Really? World of Warcraft had been reigning on that list for years! From the beginning!

How is that even popular?
How much income is LoL pulling in?
And is it really that amazing of a game?
The HoN vs LoL battle surely has not met its end.

1. It has a shit ton players, doesn't mean it's the most popular game in the world.

Could very well be. It has the best Cash Shop around and thus it's actually FREE.
Not to mention the game is a lot of fun and very accessible.

LoL did to MOBAs what WoW did to MMORPG's.
I'd be suprised if it's not one of the most popular F2P's/Online games at the moment :J

HoN stayed B2P too long. Also, one of the bigger factors is that LoL is more casual oriented compared to HoN.

first of all you can't compare WoW to LoL in any aspect.... and like "Faith" said HoN was B2P and LoL is more casual, I've played both in beta and now and I really can't enjoy HoN for some reason...

Yes I can. I'm comparing them in popularity, player base, growth, and revenue.

Well, you still really cant compare them, Popularity? wow has league beat by a long shot, i guarantee if you go out and ask 100 random people what world of warcraft is, most will know, if you ask them what league of legends the majority will have no clue, player base? well this one you cant really judge since its a lobby based game and not even a MMO(yes its online but if you can call league of legends a mmo you can call all of the call of duty games MMO's)

i mean you really cant compare them, one is a MMORPG, one is a MOBA, two completely different games for two completely different types of gamers.

sure you CAN compare scale but what is the point? what are you trying to prove?

if you want to compare games, you need to keep them in the same genre, its like compareing a 80's action movie to a drama, it just doesn't work.

so in the case of HoN, LoL, Dota, and all the other countless MOBA's yes LoL = most popular game.

The majority of those LoL accounts are smurfs, banned, and inactives. Even though HoN was B2P for too long, the game play is much faster, requires micro-management, and has a harder learning curve, that leaves me to my next point:

HoN is much more rewarding than LoL since there are a lot of things that you have to do with your hero/champion to fully utilize it's power from early game to late game.

This also includes learning how to deny creeps, towers, and trying to stay alive since you do lose gold upon death. Fighting an enemy team while activating skills, item abilites, and controlling multiple units at the same time is great.

flash is a offensive and defensive spell , it seems like is too much for some people to handle
and yes guinsoo is the creator of dota ALLSTARTs that was much more popular than the original dota from icefrog

Even without counting accounts, the X-fire data is counting number of hours played, which has nothing to do with # of accounts.... so it's still legit if you're going by that data.

DotA 2's gonna wipe the floor and free us from the garbage that is LoL. A true insult to the genre that was DotA(AoS) and saying Guinsoo is the creator of DotA is proving they're ******ed.

Edit: I did play LoL for a while and the more I played, and the more the core design flaws appeared(Runes and masteries, for instance) and the Flash metagame is dumb as hell.

Kill HoN? No, not really.
It's quickly moving away from DotA, focusing on quick games revolving around ganking and pushing.
None of that 60min ricing which DotA 2 is going to consist of.

LoL actually has a quite high skillcap but it varies among champions quite a lot.
Also the skillcap in LoL is rather different from Hon/Dota since you won't have to be great at denying to play a decent game :>

Honestly its getting there if it isnt already. I just started college and within my first week of programming I know of 3 other people in one class that all play LoL.

the thing is ... lol wont punish you for playing their game for free.
the execution of the meta is smoother and their stereotypes aint a one build wonder. you can get away with building a dps type tankish and building a support type ap or building a tank AD/AS and even some mage types as dps types... etc

and they also have the journal of justice ... (edit: joj is a "newspaper" in the lol world that brings news on the current events in the world. and it breathes rpg elements into a pvp game ... its brilliant...)

when people say "casual" or "polished" all they are trying to say is, its better in everyway then their competition.

HoN beats LoL in graphics, easily. And there isn't one specific build to build a hero in HoN. It also depends on what the enemy team has to counter them as you would on LoL.
