    Default Sad Day in California

Just came across this terrible video:

Students were getting pepper sprayed at UC Davis on Friday for refusing to disperse from their line across the sidewalk. This OWS movement is getting out of hand. I really hope OWS people vent their frustrations in the 2012 elections instead of escalating the violence further. Otherwise we're just going to be looking at a war with the police if videos like this keep coming.

The UC Davis campus must've been located in the wrong part of California. I'm pretty sure if that happened in some other areas, police officers would've been shot full of holes.

Off topic, but the guy who sprayed the protesters Lieutenant Pike, he makes a pretty good amount of money.

According to Nathan Brown, assistant professor at UC Davis:

"When students covered their eyes with their clothing, police forced open their mouths and pepper-sprayed down their throats. Several of these students were hospitalized. Others are seriously injured. One of them, forty-five minutes after being pepper-sprayed down his throat, was still coughing up blood."
    Just read that on Wikipedia.

    That's... woah.

I guess if you ever want to be an abusive asshole with getting arrested or in trouble, just become a cop.

It sucks to see that the right to protest really has no importance anymore since every local government ignores it.

um. aren't there people getting *****, selling drugs and killing people? really? you can never get there on time to save lives but I guess since peaceful protesters don't move, it makes it easier for you to get your paycheck.

I could see if these students were running around destroying things but they were just sitting there peacefully. This is getting out of hand and I hope something is done about it.

The major thing the protesters do not realize is that even making everyone hate the police will change nothing while the government is deadlocked. They are not out there trying to help better officials be elected, spreading a message that would help change things, or even giving a clear message of what they want. All they are doing is sitting there crying that they are angry and being treated wrong. Some have attempted to compare them to the Vietnam War protesters, but they had a clear message of end the war.

Until they can come up with some productive other than trying to start a riot against the police, I hope they continue to get trashed until they go away or come up with something useful.

UC Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi, who approved the police action taken November 18 on her students, gets the silent treatment from her school as she leaves campus. Silence has never been so deafening.

Sinnful, where do you get your info? They have a message, but if your listening to Fox News then then your being s****fed bullshit and theres no hope for you. You could say part of their message is get money the **** out of politics. You could say another part is fix these ****ing bullshit police. Let me know when you start watching something besides Fox News.

Since when does a protest get allowed one message? "You can only have one thing you fight for, only one, not two, three, or four, just one, so pick and choose dudes.". theres ALOT of bullshit going on and there fed up with ALOT of things.

''Just when these American citizens needed their rights most, the government took them away. And rights aren't rights if someone can take them away. They're privileges. That's all we've ever had in this country, a bill of TEMPORARY privileges. And if you read the news, even badly, you will know the list gets shorter, and shorter and shorter.

Sooner or later, the people in this country are going to realize the government doesn't give a **** about them. The government doesn't care about you, or your children, or your rights, or your welfare or your safety. It simply doesn't give a **** about you. It's interested in its own power. That's the only thing. Keeping it, and expanding it wherever possible.

Personally, when it comes to rights, I think one of two things is true: either we have unlimited rights or we have no rights at all."
    --George Carlin

are peaceful and non-violent not the same thing? both involve no violence. i was being sarcastic with that post, due to the responses in my previous threads.
No random person on the internet is going to change my mind.

No I don't listen to Fox news.

Yes, I think OWS is useless and will accomplish nothing. It is just a waste of time and money since they NO CLEAR MESSAGE or purpose. But then again this is the internet so for funziez I'll say that I agree with the police, but they should have followed standard crowd control procedures that were introduced before use of pepper spray which involves beating them with batons and dragging them away.

In other words, you're telling them to **** off and get out of the way before authorities retaliate. I think you do not understand the meaning of nonviolent peaceful protests; they asked for this to happen because they wanted it to happen to them. I am not sympathetic nor care about what's going on, but this is a psychological attempt to just show that the OWS will do anything to voice out their opinion.

OWS is trying to make a POINT people are fed up with ALL the shit that's going on now not just one thing. Sure they could have just stayed at home and waited till 2012 to vote and hope and pray the other side doesn't out vote them. But look how well that system have served us. It's time something was done. OWS is the FIRST step just give it time it's only been two months since it started.

    That is so backwards-assed I don't even-

I suppose if African Americans didn't want to get lynched, they should not have been stood up for their rights, or if homosexuals did not want to potentially get beaten to death by religious moral nuts, they should just stay in the closet.

What a completely rubbish reason that is.

But those protests had a point.

I think OWS is a load of crap because it has no point. Yes, they are angry. Everyone is angry, but they are being ****ing useless about it. They offer no solution, no clear message, no support for political change. They just stand around in large groups, block off areas, cost cities money to deal with their shit, or commit their own crimes that are not covered by the media (aka the rapes, theft, and assaults that have gone on in the camps).

These protests are not about some great social injustice that is clearly understood, they are about angry people congregating in large groups that believe that if you put enough angry people in one spot, something will change. No it won't, change takes ideas and action, not standing around *****ing that something is wrong.

You clearly underestimate how many of the rights you currently enjoy were brought about because of people protesting.

Maybe you should go educate yourself on the benefits of protesting before opening your mouth.

I am opening my mouth on this one because I think this protest is a load of shit. At no time did I say protesting is worthless. It amazes me how much people assume shit on this forum. Good job on joining this club.

Saying shit like "Easy solution for them not have been attacked, don't lock arms and sit across the sidewalk while refusing to move." can be considered a shot at any protest in the course of history.

Try reading your posts from the point of view of someone else, they come across very ignorant and very anti protest.

Just because you don't agree with the OWS protests doesn't mean you can spout crap like

"but they should have followed standard crowd control procedures that were introduced before use of pepper spray which involves beating them with batons and dragging them away. "

    Herp a derp Educate yourself.
I'm not the one running my mouth with ignorant babble because I don't understand what OWS is about.

    Well, it's dead simple.

The "civil rights movement" was for civil rights for everyone.

"OWS"? Well that seems to be about "occupying the wall street".

I am strongly against shutting the wall street down. Who will benefit from it? No one.
Many many more People would loose jobs over that though, if you put any business that is listed on the wall street (which is only the majority of the biggest businesses of the world) in danger. They will not be able to meet their financial needs and will be unable to sustain their current operation. The turn-over they make is in money. If you shut that of, you basically turn the electricity in every factory and office of. It endangers the jobs of about 70% of all Americans directly, to shut down the wall street. That's why it is dumb.

**** you all, both sides of you.

All you're hearing about the government and the influence the lobbyists and the corporations hold with them, as well as all the "news" everyone's been getting about the protests getting violent and full of kooky bums, all hearsay, seriously. All news is hearsay. I thought everyone here was mature enough to know that?

Of course there's gonna be dirty homeless hippies at counterculture things like this. Of course if there's a protest there's gonna be violence in some form, whether or not it starts out violent or non-violent.

But what gets me the most is people refusing to give even one piece of logical quarter in the argument. This is less an intellectual discussion about what the United States needs to do to get itself back on a track that can benefit its citizens the best, and more of nerds, geeks and hipsters using logic as huge e-peen swords to prove their superiority in some kind of heirarchy that doesn't even exist. With quite a bit of name-calling and personal insults and misunderstood posts thrown into the mix, as well.

And come on, Ronin, you're taking what is clearly violent police action against nonviolent protesters and using that to say that the entire protest movement is too violent. Whaaaaaaaat?

Honestly, I think the fact that this entire movement has no clear objective is both a blessing and a curse. The blessing is that you can get activists campaigning for similar goals under the same banner. The curse is of course attracting people who don't even get the point of it all but are joining just because they're "rebels" now.

Most of us are most likely working off of different perceptions of the movement itself, so I think we should all educate ourselves more about the entire movement. Gratscorpio himself said that all he saw at the Occupy Philadelphia protest camp were druggies and hippies who argued among themselves as much as they did drugs together. Yes, those kinds of people exist, and they are drawn to protest and counterculture movements like this like moths to a fire. However, I do not think that this should be taken as representative of the entire of the entire movement and thus taken as a reason to dismiss it all.

But seriously, people, please stop bickering over this in the manner that little children argue over who gets to kick the ball first.

I'm probably the only person who found this hilarious. The cop walked up with pepper spray, put it up in the air to get everyone's attention like: "OH YEAH, TIME TO BRING THE PAIN!" and started to spray them like he was watering his flower garden.

    It had me cracking up.
