Default Notch Stepping down from Minecraft

Markus "Notch" Persson, the charismatic head of Minecraft developer Mojang, is no longer lead developer on the game that made him a millionaire, after he passed the reins to Jens Bergensten.

Writing on his blog, Persson explains that the move means Bergensten "will have the final say in all design decisions, so he will kinda sorta become my boss, I guess.

"We've been working together on Minecraft for a year now, and I'm amazed at how much in sync we two are when it comes to design the game. He's truly a great person to work with, and I feel very confident handing over the leadership of Minecraft to him."

Under Persson's stewardship, Minecraft sold more than four million copies before it was even out of beta, earning the studio almost £50 million in the process. And what next for Notch himself? "Personally, I will now rest for a while, then get back to work refreshed and eager," he writes. "I'll be helping out with Minecraft, of course, but also starting work on some new project."

Was bound to happen sooner or later, not surprising at all. Hopefully this will speed things up when it comes to updates.

I was under the impression it was Jeb doing most of the work for the past 6 months or so. In any case he was under appreciated, hope this works out well for both of them.

Man. I can't get over what a piece of crap Notch is. Now that he's gotten a few million and reached 1.0, what the f**k does he care? Sheesh.

At least the game is actually going to see bug fixes at a decent rate now.

I'm sure now that he has lots of money, we'll see some very interesting games coming from Notch in the future.

I personally know a lot of people that worked hard on mods and he simply stole it, prettied it up some and dumped it in his still incomplete game and ran off with credit.

So excuse me if I don't give a crap if he's gone.
I've never played Minecraft but I can tell you from a developers standpoint that if he did this they would be able to sue him.

I'm sure that the people who made these mod's signed some kind of agreement during the alpha or beta test or SOMETHING. There would be no way for a developer to place a model, texture, music score or anything WITHOUT giving credit to the creator AND make money off it.

There would be legal issues. Look at what happened to the developer of facebook. Even the people who made the IDEA sued him for 50 million. Check to see if these people are suing and if not, you can most likely say there it's because they simply can't.

I'll be glad if you quote me where Notch has said that they are "his" ideas when adding a specific content. I really will be glad.

Valve's promotion wasn't as helpful as you are making it out to be. Yes it gave a little boost but not so significant. Those were all the people who spread the word, SeaNanners who made one of the first awesome "Let's Play", epic trailer made 1 guy(forgot it's name but you should definitely know what I mean if you have ever played Minecraft).

From your post I am pretty sure you haven't read anything at all. I won't type a wall of text since Minecraft forum has all the information you need to clarify things.
tl;dr - Notch hasn't dumped Minecraft; He is still a developer in Minecraft

He has other side projects he is working on if you have ever had any interest in following Minecrafts development. Please point me to one company who has hung upon a single game which has had a great initial success and a good popularity among people while slowly selling more and more copies while managing to keep the company running.

I don't know if your brain works but it is only logical(financially) that Notch hands over the main lead to Jeb(which he rightfully deserved as he has been working very hard in developing Minecraft) and stays as n irregular developer while working on his new projects(i.e Scrolls).

still incomplete game and ran off with credit.
I am sorry, what? I don't even know how to approach this one. Is WoW complete? Is LoL complete? Is HoN complete? Is Lineage II complete? Is Maplestory complete? Is Terraria complete? No. Why? You can't "complete" or "finish" sandbox, mmo games jesus ****ing christ. It's just mind-blowing to even read this. I have no words.

P.S If you think I am a fanboy then you are extremely wrong. Look up the facts. But of course I doubt you'll do that and opt for the easy way out. Meh...

I never called you a fanboy.

Think what you will, at the end of the day it's just a game. By incomplete, I'm aware it's a sandbox game. I mean Incomplete in the sense that he never delivered things he promised, such as a zombie expansion, lanterns, never completed villages and their NPCs (they have no added bonus/worth to the game other than it being cute), almost mindless monster AI, the mod API especially... Things like this.

I don't know what you mean by Messy Way Out. I'm not a mindless troll, I read Minecraft forums and as I said, know people that were affected by having their ideas stolen and never given any credit or even a Thank You.

I don't know Notch as a real person but my fiance and I have been around Minecraft and the Mojang scene for a very long time, enough to see the mistakes he's made.

Anyway, have fun. I still play Minecraft from time to time, it's still fun. But being a fan of a game doesn't make me blind to it's flaws and that of the company behind it.

The thing is Notch promised alot more stuff (like CTF in multiplayer for example) before release. So it's technically not "complete", but notch's development was not "finished."
