If you are having trouble with combat or just curious on the best ways to fight, here is a decent list of solo tactics that could take you a long way. N+1 followed by defense is probably the easiest thing a beginner can do.
If you want to focus on combat, one of your biggest goals is to keep your combat power down so that you can train other skills easily. For instance, if you raise Combat Mastery and Defense too high at once you will end up making many monsters considered weak to you. If you do this, combat skills will train much slower and you will have to fight stronger enemies would could be overwhelming to a beginner player.
Many people recommend focusing on raising windmill, but I've always been a smash guy myself so I can't give many tips on that.
That wiki has loads and loads of information and guides, wouldn't hurt to look through any of it if you ever feel lost.
