when the people realize cash shop mmos are a waste of money and p2p mmos are also a waste of money,, there will be an uproar..
Reputation: 34Unless some magic happens that cures poverty and helps poor gamers who have more important bills to pay every month and can't afford to sign up to any new P2P game that hits the market, people are going to prefer F2P over P2P.
If more companies would adopt EVE Online's model (or something similar) then you'd see an actual workable F2P/P2P hybrid model and online game quality would (in theory) increase dramatically. And by EVE's model I mean the whole thing where they're a P2P game but offer in-game items you can buy with in-game money that give you subscription time, meaning you can play the game for free due to other players who have the extra money to spend buying those items with money and then selling them for in-game money; effectively allowing them to buy in-game money. The player gets in-game money, another player gets to play the game for free for another month, and the game company gets more money; EVERYBODY WINS. It's a no-brainer, but I've yet to see or hear of anyone else following that design. >_>
Hearing about Namco calling F2P games a fad just makes me think they've lost touch with reality. Then again, I don't really care about whatever ignorant shit they decide to say so long as they keep making Tales Of games. :3
They're silly. You can't judge the quality of a game just from the business model alone. There's lots of so called AAA titles that I would consider garbage as well as a handful of F2P games I would consider good (by core gameplay alone)
On the other hand: F2P games get a bad rep simply because many companies do not understand how F2P should truly work. As I've mentioned in my little prediction article..., I'm hoping companies will wise up and realize that F2P can be done right.

As for F2P games being relerased this year there are certainly a lot of high quality ones.
The most recent ones that come to mind are Blacklight Retribution, Tribes Ascend, Firefall, Planetside 2, etc. Ive played all of these except for planetside (which we can assume will be decent since a lot of the original team which made Planetside 1 is working on it) and they were all really really good.
If a company has content that is unlocked via cash shop im ok with that so long as the meat portion of the content (the stuff that changes gameplay) is unlocked also with a sensible ingame currency. Cosmetic stuff unlocked with real currency is fine by me.
Reputation: 72Dragon nest and Vindictus and mabinogi are high quaity f2p game out there. they do better then p2p games
SWTOR should go f2p crappy clone game feature with Star wars theme going on.
Bandai is forgettting they had mmorpg call hellgate it fall apart when it was p2p
B2p will still have cash shop
they just need what blance the cash shop.
and make cash shop item tradable

Reputation: 10just LOL'd at this post. so ignorant. too many great f2p games. that means majority of people don't need p2p games.
Reputation: 10Yet another case of a Japanese publisher just being completely behind on the times. Nothing to see here....
Its strange how he thinks its a fad. Many of the more successful F2P games like LOL and TF2 are under the impression based on market studies that they make more money by being on a F2P model vs a P2P model at this stage.
I still like the idea of F2P from the aspect that it allows different customers to spend different amounts; some of them spend more than what you would charge and some would spend less but nobody feels forced which makes them more likely to stay customers or to spend money at some point.
LoL is not high quality lol, releasing hero everyweek or so is just lame..
@blaze, nexon ruin there game = no longer high quality
the only good f2p company is webzen (imo)
Reputation: 72have you been under rock webzen take over 3 year to release one single game and they only game there support dam Mu online they Desparte getting people to play that game give out exp code and storage code i get them daily i just delete
nexon game not ruin. there enjoyable
LOL! so what if it took 3 years to get a game over? ever thought of something happened between it?
they still support MU because its a perfect diablo clone!
now let the waiting game of MU2, will be a superb game, storage/exp code? what? lol, and you dont see any ads for MU online ever, and their population still growing. desperate*?
maybe you should protest about gaming so it doesnt take 3-4years for a game to arrive to NA, saying US need to make more better games than "WoW, RIFT, SWTOR" im not saying theyre bad games i enjoy them, but they clone from each other way to much.
Reputation: 195It's not like Namco-Bandai has a vested interest in the P2P model and wouldn't think outside the box right?

Ok - so how about games which are trial-based but still have hundreds of hours' of trial-based content?
Originally, games were advertised by being on the store shelves. All games were retail, and ppl found-out by buying it from stores.
But guess what? Retail games are limited to Blizzard. So where do people find out about games?
1) Ads
2) Friends
F2P games rely on the latter marketing scheme, which means that they have a lower risk when attracting users. Any decent game should be able to rely on friends referring friends to the game, as it indicates that the game is worth hanging-around on for more than a few weeks.
Edit: Mu is a perfect Diablo clone? *renewed-interest in D3*
Unsure whether I want to play cuz the graphics look so dark. When I started LoL it was too dark. I still won't play vlad or sion.
thats not just for you, its for the whole server whether ur new or not lol..
and the game needs it and webzen knows it so they do it often, which is good?
you're saying desperate like they need anymore players while most of their servers are full this is split up 8 servers, i would know since ive been playing it since 2004
Reputation: 63To a extent I agree
In the F2P games of today you'll see at least twice the amount of cash shop updates to content ones, support is mostly appalling (excluding a few B2P gone F2P titles), and community that quite frankly is often less than "appealing".
But I highly disagree that it'll be a fad, it came to stay.
