Is German hard?

So I meant to start learning Dutch awhile ago, but there isn't a whole lot of material available for learning it. I also wanted to learn German after Dutch, so I figure that with all the movies and games(you can count on your hand the number of dutch games) etc and the material available German would be easier to learn first. This begs the question, with it's case systems and odd grammar, how hard is German? I think it sounds pretty cool and would be fun to learn, would give me an excuse to play games as well . I do plan on living in Europe at some point and I may take German in university if it is offered in a year.

You should learn Swedish instead, 70% similar to English and Sweden is ridiculously kind(seriously easily one of the best countries).
German is similar to Swedish as well, wasn't that hard when I was studying it, not that I remember anything now as I didn't really intend on learning the language for anything other than a grade.

Its been 8 months since i came to germany without knowing a word now i speak quite good and understand everything i havent looked at any books or whatnot my learning was tv cartoons and conversations at work ...

Could always try Rosetta stone, I hear it's the best program for learning a new language, only thing that would be better would be to surround yourself with the language like poeticas did.

Well, you're only a few steps away from quite a few European languages once you learn German so yes, you might want to try that instead of Dutch.

Rosetta stone is not very good . It doesn't really teach you a language, it gives you a few basic things you could have learned in a few days, except it takes weeks/months.

I'm currently learning Dutch using the Michel Thomas method, and I have to say it is one of the best methods for learning a language. Dutch is most closely related to English - more-so than German and once you are fluent in that, it will be MUCH easier to learn other Germanic languages.

I know Dutch is an easier language, and closer to English but what I am thinking is that it will be much easier to learn German once I get a basis for it as there is tons of German movies, games , books etc. Considering that a program like Michel Thomas only gives a basis, once you finish that you will need some other method of improving and there is not nearly as much Dutch content available.
I am downloading the Michel Thomas German and Dutch right now though, it looks alright.

WEll jsut imagine me ... coming here to live and work without even knowing a word ... and buying games which are some ONLY in German ... and i do not even understand a word ... so ... it was quite nerve wrecking and since i am not an dictionary person i couldn't learn by reading dictionaries or such so i just LABA LABA bla bla bla a lot and my german is quite good now

How do you find Germany? If you don't mind me asking, where in Germany are you?

Maybe I will hit you up when I can actually understand it haha, I started the Michel method last night, the only thing I know how to say so far is do you want to come with me this evening :P.

I'm pretty sure German is way easier than dutch.
I'm certain that you will never master the dutch grammar....
because at least 90% of the dutch people can't even properly spell .

But once you've learned German, learning dutch is pretty easy because the words are about the same.
There aren't much reasons to learn dutch though, we're a pretty small country, we don't really rule the markets.. etc.
If you plan to move to europe the best place to live would be germany really.

I took German in high school, I found it quite easy to pick up. Much easier than French (I am Canadian).

Wow, I never realized how beautiful and poetic German is. I also hear there is a lot of amazing German literature that just isn't the same when translated, I can't wait to be able to read a book in German.
I also just finished the first disc of the Michel Thomas method, it isn't that bad so far. When playing some snes roms in German I have been able to pick out a few things here and there that I understand, hopefully that gets better .

I could easily learn french because I am Canadian, but I absolutely hate french and it is not a language I want to learn.
