Question about fallout new vegas

Im going to keep it simple. After you complete the main quest, is it like fallout 3, where you can not 'contine' (like explore etc) and have to revert to your last save?
Just got the complete collection and i'm wondering if i should do the dlc before finishing up the main quest

As I recall, you can continue with the game after completion. Not like you'll finish it because GODDAMN is there a lot of sidequesting to do.
