    Default Runescape And Economics

So, I've been playing my brother's Runescape account for a while; I don't like the game enough to invest that much time in it myself, but I really enjoy merchanting, and it makes my brother money.
Several months ago, I discovered a strange phenomenon: oak logs would alternate between ~19 gp and ~40 gp. As in, it would sit at 19 for a week or so, and then jump up to 40 for a week.

What I'm wondering is whether or not this sort of thing is normal in an MMORPG.
Has anyone else seen things like this?

And, does anyone know why this worked?

It's called merchanting. You buy out an item, wait out till the prices rise and then sell for higher price. Although Oak logs are hard to buy out since there could be literally trillions of logs floating around the market.

But I can assure you that prices will drop tremendously for many high quantity/cheap items in the coming month or so.

Runescape actually did something that is quite unseen in most mmorpgs. The grand exchange computes supply and demand and adjusts the price accordingly. It is not based on the price people decide to sell, rather how many people wish to buy. Most auction house or trade systems in other games do not hold this system, it is based on what people decide to sell it the item at. It's one of the few things they did right.

Really? What makes you say that?

Ketsuarikado: That's interesting. And, it explains a lot of the freaky stuff I've run into, like things that won't really buy at the price set in the GE. Thanks!

Runescape economy was always like that ... You could always sell stuff on one server for such an price and on another server for already different price ... But it was way back in the day before Auction houses were invented ...

Now its all more simple and yes it is normal in an mmorpg ... I have seen such things in many mmorpgs ... plus i have seen many times economy being ****ed up because of some dumb people ...

Just saying what a few people have told me. Not exactly sure myself. They are pretty much always right, rarely wrong.

Yeah. The grand exchange, then the antibotting, and then the return of Wildy all increased my respect for Jagex.

I literally could not believe it when they took the Wilderness away.

I only learned a few weeks ago that they put it back in a while back; I imagine that it lead to some people leaving the game.

I've always thought Jagex was a well-run, competent company, but that change made literally no sense to me in the context of the over-all game.

Glad they put it back. I might give RS another try...
