Default Bethesda to Announce Elder Scrolls MMO in May?

Here's some interesting information, will it in fact be an Elder Scrolls MMORPG, or is Tom's Guide chomping at the wrong bit and it turns out that it is Fallout Online, only time will tell:

Bethesda and ZeniMax are hard at work on a new MMO, and it's taking you back to the world of Skyrim, Oblivion and Morrowind.

While details are still few and far between, Tom’s has learned that ZeniMax Online Studios and Bethesda will officially announce Elder Scrolls Online in May 2012.

An industry source that wishes to remain anonymous revealed the name of the new MMO to us, and confirmed that the game would take place a full millennium before The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Using the Elder Scrolls Wiki timeline as a guide, Elder Scrolls Online will likely take place during the “Second Era,” or several hundred years before any of the other Elder Scrolls games. This information was corroborated by two additional sources before publication.

Elder Scrolls Online will have three playable factions, according to the tipster. Not much is known about the factions, except each is represented by one of three animals: A lion, a dragon, and a bird of prey (either a phoenix or an eagle, we aren’t sure).

A May 2012 announcement would likely be followed by some sort of presence at E3, the annual Los Angeles video game convention. The game would also be shown at Quakecon 2012 in August, along with id Software’s Doom 4 and several other titles.

The fact that ZeniMax and Bethesda are working on an MMO is hardly a secret, as related job postings have been on ZeniMax’s website for quite some time now. What remained unknown until now was the universe in which this MMO would take place. While some were certainly hoping for a Fallout MMO of some sort - a game that ZeniMax and Bethesda control the publishing rights for – that is not to be the case.

When Tom’s reached out for confirmation, the response from ZeniMax and Bethesda was a “no comment.” We will update this article as more information comes in.

Part of me thinks that since the Elder Scrolls universe is so bad that it could provide an amazing backdrop for an mmo. The other part is telling me that a game series that focuses on single player moments will get lost in translation when turning into an mmo. I think the only way it would be remotely successful is if it was an action mmo, none of this point and click crap.

Skyrim is great game only because of the modding community, without it the game would just die months ago.

Skyrim MMO is bad idea, especially by Bethesda and ZeniMax...
Skyrim is only good because of the MOD Tools, 10,000+ mods for the game and rising.

Skyrim MMO is bad because there be no MOD support, what ever Bethesda and ZeniMax make your stuck with the crappy gameplay they come up with, you wont be able to change anything or add any new content and have to pay monthly fee to play the game.

They should just add co-op to skyrim, everyone wants it.

What are you talking about; skyrim is an amazing game without the mods. Otherwise it would be dead for consoles which it clearly isn't; everyone that I know that played it for console loved the game.

Sure mods are fun to mess around with but it doesn't change the fact that if you were to turn crap purple it would still be crap.

Where as this is a genuinely good game.

The idea of a elder scrolls MMO is nice at first

Then you realize Skyrim is buggy as all hell, overrated, half assed, and would be border line trash without the modding community fixing Bethesda's mistakes and adding stuff that is far superior to anything Bethesda did themselves.

I'm liking the mods myself but saying all that is a bit overkill. o.O

Meh, it's just my opinion really. It feels as if Skyrim was half assed compared to what it could have been, yet they are raking in the praise that the modders I feel deserve.

It just annoys me when more credit then deserved is given.

You're right about the modders doing one hell of a job but keep in mind Bethesda will still be releasing expansions and updates (like the new 1.5) for Skyrim. It's always been like that I feel, Bethesda creates to basic layer of the game and the modders just build upon that.

But no, really, Bethesda making a MMO sounds horrible. It'll be pretty, sure, but inevitably crippled by game-breaking bugs from day 1. They really ought to get a handle on how to make single-player games first before moving up to online gaming.

Awesome. So now we'll get an MMO that launches as a buggy as hell game, with really horrible character models, 50's music, SUPER SLOW MO ATTACKS, won't allow 4GB of ram until 4 patches in....

    Looking forward to it!
