breathing and singing using your diaphragm, not your throat

Practice, learning good technique and practice.

You have to develop a good ear for pitch. Practice scales and intervals until your intonation is rock solid.

Or if you just want to be a 'cover singer', just keep singing to songs I guess, haha. Record yourself and play it back. If it sucks, practice more. Repeat until satisfied / you give up.

the best thing you can do before is make sure you can pitch properly. Also, a good idea is to do some sort of warm up or vocal exercise (it's really embarrassing but it does help).

Something like this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqVzi36AlNA (For each of the notes, just sing "la" and pitch it to the tune)

If you're going to start doing proper singing (like lessons), they will probably do a warm up before the lesson starts, but if you can do the pitching yourself without the piano noises in the background, then that's great. If you can't get to the end, don't worry about it, go as high as you can.

Also, try going down the scale instead. (the 5 notes still go up and down as normal, but after they have finished, go lower by half an octave every time)

This. It also has something to do with your voice. Even if you have the right breathing technique, it doesn't exactly mean it will sound good or anything. There are countless of people that have been taking singing lessons for years, and they're still crap.

If it were as simple as getting a few sentences from people on a forum, don't you think we'd all have a #1 album by now?

There is no secret in singing. Same as there is no secret in talking, watching T.V, Playing video games, Jogging outside etc. It is all about how much you put into it. How much you want to achieve. Do you have morals and do you belive you can be good? If yes. You will be. This is the truth.

Admittedly, I'd love to be able to sing but sadly, I can't. I wish I was tone deaf so I would at least think I could sing okay

This has made me want to look for tips/tricks but I'm at work and I think I'll get weird looks if I started trying to sing....

I've never in my life seriously tried to sing so maybe I do have a secret talent? There's usually people around me 100% of the time so if I just started singing and I happened to suck that'd be awkward.

When I'm in the shower I sing amazingly, or so I think.

    You probably don't.

Yes record yourself and listen to it played back. You sound completely different from outside your body, than when you're hearing it from inside your own head.

Sing from my diaphragm they said. How the fk do I do that?

and finally, if I were to take singing lessons how long would it take to learn? I'm not saying you guys know the answer or anything I just want an approximate guess.
use your belly to breath, not your chest. Thats what using your diaphragm means.
