Default Memorial Day Weekend, What does it mean to you?

Time for another American holiday! I know a huge portion of our forum userbase aren't even from the US (based on your self proclaimed locations + google analytics research), so it probably doesn't mean a whole lot. But then I feel talking to other Americans, the holiday is often not even noticed other than an obligatory bbq.

So does this holiday mean something to you? If so is it because you have a direct relationship to the military in your family? I'm curious what general consensus is on this.

    To be perfectly honest?

It does not mean a damn thing to me.

No Holiday does in fact, not even Christmas (of course the reason for that one is because my family already spends a lot of time together willingly)

Yeah, I'll be honest and agree. I don't really observe the real meaning. We always use it as more of a "omg its summer lets get hammered" day.

Also the first day my mom allowed me to go swimming in the lake when I was a kid, so we usually wait that long now that we're adults anyway. I don't know why, but I guess maybe my mom was right haha.

As a foreigner it only holds one meaning to me: sales.
    Also another one: crowded malls.

No idea what this holiday is about and I couldn't care less about it.
Then again every nation has this one weekend or festival where something important is supposed to be celebrated but instead we make some BBQs and do nothing related to it.

Doesn't mean anything to me, because it's an American holiday.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed annually in the United States on the last Monday of May.[1] Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the fallen Union soldiers of the Civil War.
Soldiers. I think just the dead ones, but I'm not too sure.

Yes, every year I go down to the local Veterans gathering here in town and I buy 4 boxes of joe and 5 dozen donuts for them. They served my country and saw their friends die for it. I also donate 1 dollar from each check to the wounded warrior fund, but I come from a very military involved family so maybe I can see value in people that these tree huggers would call monsters.

After that quick little trip its off for bearskies and BBQ though.
