    Default Gym question

Hey guys. Right now I'm pre skinny and can only do around 10 pushups. I was thinking about getting a gym membership but since I can only do 10 pushups, should I just do pushups at home and THEN get my gym membership or should I get gym membership right now?

Also, do the protein shakes (muscle mass) n sh*t work?

    ______

EDIT: When working out at home (pushups, situps) I feel like throwing up like 15 mins in..is it because of lack of fresh air inside house or something? Cuz i can play ball and other sports for hours without feeling nausea / the feel to throw up

Protein shakes DO work, but only as a addition to your diet. I recommend you fixing that first, other wise you'll be causing your body more harm than good.
As far as protein shakes go, you'll want to first make out a solid meal plan to take them with. I like to make natural protein shakes rather than using that powder crap (2 or 3 cups of milk, with fruits, a egg, and some icecream) , however if you do choose, you may want to start with a weight gainer; Which is more a HUGE meal in the form of a liquid. Protein shakes are more or less intended strictly for taking after your work outs to feed your hungry muscles.

Also, you should invest into some egg protein for overnight while you sleep.

Your goal should be to get your caloric intake to atleast 3300 calories, with that you'll be putting on some weight, any weight will be good for now since you're skinny as you say you are, it will also provide more energy so you can further your exercises. Make sure to include oats, milk, red and white meats ( NO PORK). I recommend white meats though, because they generally are lean and have much less fat than red.

Try to get in about 5 or 6 meals a day, 3 being large meals (roughly 1000 ~ calories + each), and the rest snacks inbetween.

I also recommend buying creatine to jump start your workout, it will give you LARGE amounts of energy and endurance. Don't hit the gym just yet, give yourself about a month's work of homework outs/dieting/weight gain, with creatine and a higher caloric intake you should put on atleast 10 - 15 pounds your first month, most being water weight, but def a improvement.

Also, you will want to make eating, and working out a habit first. Because it will be hard to just jump right into.

As for feeling nauseated, you probably are using bad form, or not stretching before you begin.
    Good luck

    How old are you?

And getting a gym membership is a commitment. If you can't fully utilise the membership, a home gym will be cheaper. By home gym I don't mean getting all the machines and stuff, just a few dumb bells / bars would be enough.

You dont need to hit the gym to be fit/get muscle mass.

you are asking for advice on a gaming forum...not to say people here don't have good advice. I am just saying you can google this and find forums that are specific to exercise/weight training that will have a VAST array of information.

    An example is: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/

If you're just talking about getting in shape, and gaining some kilos, there is no need to go all obsessive in regards to diets, workout plans etc.
In many cases, this can be counterproductive, because chances are that if you haven't been working out all that much up until this point, you will not have the motivation and will-power to jump into the deep-end from the get-go. Doing so may ruin the workout experience for you, because you'll have set too high standards for yourself, and waded into what is ultimately a very mentally straining activity.

Proper workout is an exercises in patience and discipline as much as it is physical.

As Treytrey said, start by fixing your diet(that is, eating more, and eating healthy), and spend some time every day doing jailhouse rutines - various types of pushups, sit-ups, squats, hang-ups(if you have a place to grab hold of), curls etc etc.
Some people, like me, go through rutines like this on daily basis for shorter periods of time due to tight schedules - Others do longer, more intensive workouts, 2-4 times a week. Some people are beasts, and workout several times a day, 6 days a week.
Find out whatever works for you(the last is not an option in your currect state anyways), and listen to your body.

The fact of the matter is that, unless you plan on bulking up like crazy or looking like a body builder, you can work a decent amount of muscle and weight by using primarily your body, and without ever going to the gym.
Do some research on different exercises, and be meticulous in how you perform, and you'll get there eventually. Don't expect to see huge differences in a month though.

    This.

And I would go a step further to say that most people do not give good advises.

I'm not too sure what is taking you over 15 minutes to do, if pushups and situps are all you are doing.

No, it's most likely not due to a lack of fresh air. Probably because you aren't breathing right when straining.

One way to build up your endurance would be to get into some high intensity sport, my personal favorite is riding the road bike (not a mountainbike or bmx). I used to think I was in shape lifting my own body weight and running 3-4 days a week, but after taking my road bike for it first long distance ride (10-20miles round trip) I found that I was extremely tired after. Now I take my bike every day after work for a 16 mile round trip ride and it takes me around an hour to complete maybe less if I need to blow off some steam and go full speed pace the whole ride. I didn't really lose any weight from this as I was always sure to eat the proper amount of calories to maintain my current body weight of 210lbs (for competitive reasons), and if your only capable of doing 10 push ups riding a bike might actually help you build your muscles (as from what your stating they are very weak).

Just some food for thought, also the diet propositions are 100% correct. You will need to eat a ton of calories to put on weight, but it won't do you much good if it's all junk food with little to no nutritional value. I would honestly avoid red meats as they offer little to no benefits over white meats (with the exception being buffalo..but that is $$$), also protein shakes are a pretty good way to pack on some pounds quickly, but really weight is useless if you can't keep your own strength up to match it (no point in putting on weight now if you can barely handle your current weight).

Also go see your doctor they would be more than happy to help you set up a meal plan that is both healthy and will help you pack on some pounds.

I'd recommend making a bodybuilding.com account and making a thread on there forums, I've had a lot of help from those guys whenever I have a question.

Rapid sets of 5, with 30 sec rest in between, is much more effective than something broken up into 15 minutes.

What I do is, I throw 2 cups of red-top milk into a blender, with a egg, 4 tables****s of peanutbutter, and 1 cup of vanilla soymilk/almond milk for taste. I don't wake up hungry or anything either. Thats about 40 grams of protein of slow and fast digesting proteins to help you sleep.
Or better yet, just buy a container of casein protein (pictured below). You can get some from bodybuilding.com. It runs about 30$ for a month supply.
    I cant eat a raw/blended egg..

Alright so casein / peanut butter with bananas for the night. What weight gainer do you recommend?

Optimum nutrition serious mass, is what I used. 12 pound bag should last you a month.

Its one of the more well rounded weight gainers out there.. 1200 cals, 60 ~ grams of protein, and low fat.

You're not used to working out if you can only do 10 push ups and get tired very fast. That's why you're nauseous easily. No need to fret about that because it's common if you're not in shape.

I was in cross country and track back when I was in high school. Over summer I didn't work out and when school started, I would always throw up and feel sick after a 2 miles for the first week or two. Once your body gets adjusts to it, you will be perfectly fine.
