Well doesn't the NDS have internet capabilities (at least thru Wi-fi?). The NDS is probably powerful enough to support a pokemon game with an online and offline option. And if it's not, they could easily make their next portable console more than powerful enough. The technology is there.
I would gladly buy an NDS (something I haven't done since it first came out... my last Nintendo product was the gamecube, last handheld was the GBA) for an online pokemon game.
There are a shitton of wi-fi hotspots everywhere. I live in a medium sized Kansas town and my favorite Chinese restaurant has wi-fi. And it's just your average family-run deal. There's also libraries, McDonalds, Starbucks, I'm not even going to try and list them all.
Plus there's home, I think just about every router coming out now doubles as a wi-fi hotspot.
It's not hard to include single and multiplayer in to a game. It could be seamless, as well. When you're not in an area with internet, instead of having to choose single-player manually, you could just be playing the same game without other trainers there. But when you get back to an area with internet, trainers will start to pop up on your screen (if they're in your area).
If they wanted to make it even greater, they could also release a PC version (I would also buy that) that is compatiable/you can play with DS users. When you're at home, you could play on the computer, when you've got to go see your relatives, pack your handheld.
It could work, if they wanted it to.

, when to switch pokemon when to use protect and alot more, requires more skill than mmorpg nowadays lol
