Not for me. Yeah, I'd love to see great graphics in games, but if I don't have a good enough computer, I get left out. Plus, sometimes, all it takes is great style or "aesthetics" and decent graphics, and honestly, I'm perfectly happy with that.

I watched an episode of Extra Credit talking a bit about this. It was called "Graphics vs Aesthetics".

I disagree to most points of the list.

The only thing I can agree to is #5 and #4 as those are really always a good thing. I hate of reading walls of texts. And a good story is a plus too. But both aren't THAT important. And #5 is more important than #4 anyway.

#3 completely disagree. I prefer instances a lot more than open world. Instances allow the world to change depending on the stories. NPCs can run out and join fights. Doors can be opened, bridges created. All of this isn't possible in open world.
This is completely a matter of taste.

#2 I like action combat, but you can't just generally say that an MMORPG needs to have this. It should just have a unique combat system, whether its action or not. For example turn based combats can be pretty cool too. Or strategy RPG-types.

#1 Graphics are pretty much a matter of taste. Some people like me prefer 2D graphics over 3D graphics. Some like anime-style more than western-style. Some people prefer chibis, others like if characters have a realistic body structure. This is also just a matter of taste.

if a game looked like Runescape but had everything I would want in an MMO in it, I wouldn't care about the graphics

This isn't always very common. A lot of people don't like to read a wall of text to know what they have to do next.
In stead, cinematics or voice overs do the job, you only have to remember and check a short description with objective later. Like in most games, you only get people saying; 'Good day, sir, can you help me?' - 'Goodbye'. I think a lot of us grow tired of this.
Not a necessary feature at all. Takes away too many funds for the developer who could be spending it on something much more essential.

    4. A reason

How many MMORPG's have that same 'Lord of the Rings'-based story line? I guess more then 70% of them. After a while you don't even see the point anymore in playing a MMORPG if the story is identical to your previous game.
Here and their some things might be different, but after a while, you'll find out it's the same. Just the sidequests are different. A lot of them make you hunt for deer or bearmeat and what not because there is going to be a party. Fantasy MMORPG = Kill a boss ruining the lands and sending his minions. (I tried to be as short as possible)
This is completely based upon personal preference. You could create the most amazing and interesting game world in the universe, but if your gameplay or overall development quality is poor, it won't amount to anything to players.

    3. Open world

This isn't always the case too. Some are instance based while other have a loading screen when you want to go into another zone, or you have to enter a teleport.
Open world games doesn't really mean vast and open landscapes, but more decent looking landscapes and no end in sight even if you are flying over woods.
    Agree completely.

    2. Action combat

This is apperently a feature, which we will see a lot in the future. (Mhm) Hack and slash your way through a horde of enemies at instances isn't that exiting on a PC-game, but you feel a lot more accomplished then when you spam the same keys over and over again.
The actual aiming in the games makes it a bit harder too, especcially when you need to stay on target that way. Even harder if the target has good AI and tries to dodge you.
DC Universe Online was absolutely superb in this aspect. Most of your combat moves were performed from a series of certain left clicks and right clicks, and moving in certain directions in direct conjunction. However, in addition to this there were also general skills, so it still retained some of the traditional MMORPG gameplay, allowing it to come pretty easily to most. This type of combat also made open-world PVP between Heroes and Villains extremely interesting.

Kind of went off on a tangent there, but I don't fully agree with this point. I think that combat should just feel responsive during gameplay, whether it be target and hit 1-9 on the keyboard or left/right clicking repeatedly. Quality animations are a huge deal too, aesthetically speaking.

    1. Top notch graphics

Even tho, a lot of gamers aren't that graphic-hungry, dont' tell me you didn't wet your pants when you've seen trailers which make your eyes cry, in a good way. For instance; Guild Wars 2.
The demand for graphic over quantity seems a lot higher these days. As we have a new generation of gamers which started playing games like Call of Duty 4. Which graphics where overwhelming for that time. Cell-shaded games seems to be getting more hype too these days.
I don't think graphics necessarily need to be "top-notch", they just need to feel like the developers put actual effort into them. If a game is released in 2011 that seems like it should have come out over five to ten years ago, something is wrong.

And, like you said yourself, these are just my opinions.

Voiced dialogue is definitely what new MMO's should be doing and I probably wouldn't want to try it if they didn't have that feature because it's just lazy to be doing the same kind of thing since Everquest and WoW came out.
graphics don't have to be extreme but I'd like for them to be run smoothly on the highest res.
Story is probably the most important one; why would we play without it?

I don't know. A great story DOES enhance the experience of the game, but if it's gonna be some generic high/low-fantasy fanfare, I'd rather there not be a story so I can make up my own as I (and some friends) go along, via Roleplaying.

Running smooth has nothing to do with the game itself, especially if you're talking about "on the highest resolution" in which case could be many different options depending on who it is playing.

    Oh, I don't know... Fun?
