Default Teen Gets ‘Two Years for One Joint’

Teen Gets ‘Two Years for One Joint’
Mitchell Lawrence is serving a two year prison sentence for the heinous crime of not only selling pot (Gasp!), but doing it within 1,000 feet of a school (Double Gasp!!). The government will spend close to $100,000 to incarcerate this horrible criminal for a non-violent, victimless act. Meanwhile, your friendly police continue to get away with committing violent crimes against innocent civilians. Apparently the only individuals they “Serve and Protect” are those profiting from the illegality of certain drugs.

that is kinda shit. I mean we have rappiests that get only 10 years, where this kid didn't hurt any one, and he is getting 1/5 of the most hated people in the world.

ya, I know drugs are illegal, but isn't that a bit harsh, and if you look at the info ever since the government started the war on drugs drug use has gone up and up and up and up. I mean why don't they look at the facts, it was better when they weren't illegal! Now, I'm not saying they should be legal, I'm just saying that they are going way to much into this, and one of the main problems is that it is so heavilly enforced, that that is the reason people take drugs, its just stupid...
oh and carpetshark, if you were trying to be funny, you failed, and this isn't the sortof thing you try and be funny about.

I dunno. The proceeds from selling drugs do go towards harming society. If he was only smoking, then I think I'd have more sympathy.

Besides, he'll probably be able to get out before that, and I doubt he's going to a maximum security prison or anything like that.

I wouldn't consider anything you can smoke such a bad thing. The ones you inhale/inject/swallow are the ones you should get into big trouble for. I don't see what the big deal about a joint is. 1,000 feet isn't exactly right next to the school.

It suits him, and it IS fair. He should've known the consequences - everyone knows drugs are illegal. Oh noes, he's going to jail for smoking some Mary Jane! He broke the law, and that's what he gets.

It matters where the kid was arrested, as all state laws are different. also most of his sentence is coming from the part where he was trafficing drugs. Also, assuming he was smoking it near the school... one would assume he was selling it to the kids there. It's his own damn fault so who cares.

YES! It's the user's/seler's decision to do that. So leave em be... The only time you really need to interfere with stuff like that is when it's family doing it. Or if someone is going to commit gayicide, because killing yourself is irreversable, and it seems like a new fad.

Well, you say you know so much about sex offenders, you do also know it's not a one time deal for them, right? There's something sick and twisted about a convicted sex offender that wants to live near a school and you think there is something wrong with being denied living quarters near a school? Sex offenders have been getting off with a slap on the wrist for the longest now, it's only as of recent that the authorities have finally been cracking down.

Yeah, if you happen to get screwed and didn't do it, that'd suck but probably somewhat rare if ever. Plus, if you got off like that, it's not that big of a deal. I don't plan on wanting to become friends with little ones in my future years of being an adult. And the only other thing that would matter is just social status but it's not like you couldn't find one friend just because you were a sex offender, there are some weird people out there. Hell, there's plenty of women that obsess over serial killers and murderers in jail.

Swing and a miss I had posted that in response to this....

"Though I admit it is sickening that people harming themselves (supposedly) with drugs like weed can get a harsher punishment than say, a sex offender"

I merely pointed out that a Sex offender is punished far more severly now with more long lasting effects on the said individuals life... I did not once say they didn't deserve it & that they should be allowed to live near little children.

He deserves whatever gets thrown at him from the government, as he broke the government's law.

... I don't think its the smoking that got him in trouble so much as the fact that he was selling, and probably not "just one joint". That's far more serious.
