There's that "Nodding Disease" that's been going on massively lately, but it only affects children. The closest thing would be Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. The symptoms are memory loss, personality changes (usually aggressive), hallucinations, speech impairment, jerky movements, loss of coordination, rigid posture and seizures. It is only transmitted through contact with contaminated brain matter, though, and it wouldn't get to the point of apocalypse as they just die within 6 months from pneumonia and brain damage.

Finally got around to buying episode 3 of the game. just ran through it. Now I'm excited for 4. If the disc release has stacking trophies ill get that and play again.
