Question Is Mabinogi worth playing anymore?

Heyo, I played awhile back and was browsing through the site the other day. Does anyone still play it? Is it possible to enjoy it without pouring money into the Cash Shop? I also noticed the "Beauty Shop", is it possible to buy premium hair styles without a Premium Card in the shop, or do I have to pay for both?

I'd say it is and it isn't. It's one of those games where you more or less have to have friends to talk to/play with from the start. If not you'll get bored extremely fast. You don't have to put money into the Cash Shop at all unless you want to change how you look cosmetically.

If you can enjoy without needing a Premium Hairstyle, and also find someone to play it with - then yes - it is worth it.

Also, the first character on a fresh account can choose premium looks for free anyway

I've downloaded the game, it is currently at 28% patching, been going for like an hour. So as far as servers to play on, any suggestions?

The game is heavily cash shop dependent, if you don't mind that then yes.

True... But there is also nothing like it. I'm waiting for Mabinogi 2 myself.

Eh, only thing you'd need to buy is a pet or two, and apparently new accounts get an iventoryless mount(but it's a mount, not really gonna be used for inventory much anyways) and the new warp imp is basically the best friggen thing ever. For a one time investment of $8 USD I have a nice inventory expansion+can warp to my farm in a heartbeat.

I do think their prices for other things are high though, and I don't understand how they sell (VIP service for example...)

But yeah TL : DR $15 USD or so on some pets and you should be good provided you aren't a collector.

You can still get free rebirths post cumulative level 100, just it's every time you're 20 in game.(I do believe)

Pets have summon time lasting 90 minutes average a day, so you have to buy more, also good luck moving around without a mount, pets are also very useful in combat and for crafting. If you want to create a guild or set up a shop you have to buy premium every month, premium also gives other benefits. There are gachapons available in the cashshop, these give you random items, gear, and enchant scrolls. *sigh* and I could go on.

This game is the very definition of pay to win.
But....Pay to win what? Mabinogi was never meant to be a competitive game at all. AP gain is in no way slow unless you're trying to freaking rank a AP-heavy skill set like magic. And when the hell were pets useful in crafting? The only thing I can think of is just space to hold materials. Most people who want to set up a shop just make an alt account so they can sell off junk on that, since new accounts have free service until level 30. Though, player shops aren't that desirable for selling anything but lower priced things because of the limit on gold you can store in the trade license, so the most used method of selling things is just standing in the market channel with a party up stating what you're selling.

Also, the "benefits" of premium are minuscule compared to what a player without premium could do/earn in a matter of hours if they know what they're doing. Premium service is really only bought by guild leaders tbh.

Gachapons....You already got your answer there, "random items/equipment" gachapons rarely give out anything decent without first being bought 1351362374374374347 times, or if you're lucky. Hell, I've seen many "pr0" players I know. bust out 100+ bucks trying to get some rare stuff in the gachapon...and end up with total crap. While some newbie who just joined and decided to buy 3-4 gachapons, opens them and ends up rich because they got a high-demand super rare item. It's really hit and miss with gachapons, I don't like them too much either.

I said it in the first page, but guess I'll have to say it again to dispel the misinformation going around.

When you create an account, make your character, etc, you receive the following:

-Free permanent mount with no inventory space.
-The talent system actually starts you off with equipment based on the talent you pick
-Beginner quests give you equipment to help you get started/AP
-G1 gives you AP (74AP, just from beginning to end, not counting level ups or anything else)
-The ability to rebirth daily (reset your level/exploration level back to 1 to make gaining AP faster) until total level 100/100 (level/exploration.) Yes, that means you can milk it and get to total 99/99 for a grand total of 198 AP from levels alone.

Oh, and if you do that starting on Wednesday, when the 3x AP event kicks in? 594 AP. +74 from doing G1 gives you 668 AP. To put that into perspective, a person who never played during a double AP event and was around before G1 gave you AP will only manage to get 668 AP when their total level/exploration levels equal 668. And players that start out have the ability to get that much before they even hit 100 in either exploration or just levels, assuming they only level during 3x AP month and get to 99/99. Unlikely, yes, but possible.

Will you feel the urge to buy pets and rebirth cards and stuff from the cash shop? Yes. Do you NEED to? Well, if you keep your character at age 17 you can RB for free every 3 weeks, so you don't need character cards to rebirth. Pets? Only for extra inventory space. If they rerelease dragons/flamemeres/whatever then sure, because they're good as backup in combat.

As for the Gachapons? Don't even bother. 99% of the time you get junk anyway. They're Nexon's "get rich quick" scheme where the only people getting rich are themselves.

Oh, and did I mention if you manage to log in today before 3PM PST and stay logged in until after 3PM PST you'll get an AP +50 potion? 718 AP. Of course, this is all assuming a lot of stuff, but it's all possible.

TL;DR: Is it Cash Shop based? Yes. Do you need the cash shop to advance in the game? No. Does the cash shop give you an unfair advantage over other players? Depends on who you ask.
