Default Dark Ages - 2D MMORPG from Kru Interactive!

    Hey guys,

I saw a few posts about MMORPGs that had requests for 2d gaming, customization, and sprite-like graphics. I figured I'd take the opportunity to tell you about a game that I've enjoyed on and off for about ten years now called Dark Ages from Kru Interactive. The game was originally from Nexon. I figured I'd tell you the essentials of the game and perhaps it'll spike your interest. While the game is not 100% free to play yet, you may play from level 1 to 99. (Some quests are restricted, however you may hunt and group with other players.) Otherwise, the game is 9.95 a month and it also has an item shop. (The item shop is not pay to win, a lot of it is strictly cosmetic. However, there are some experience bonuses that grant +15% - not a large advantag

Also, I'm not a spam bot. Haha, just trying to get the word out there for this game.

Hope to hear from some of you in game!

Seems interesting. Can you go in to more detail about the politics and religion stuff you mentioned? And more about the RP aspect.

Gladly! I will do my best to explain each position and role, though there are some positions I have not held. I will try to give you the basic idea, though.

    Politics:

Dark Ages has a political system where players can be voted into office by other players and then create laws that are essentially the "rules" of each area. There are two towns which have their own governments. These towns are Mileth (where you will start as a new player) and Rucession. Players can run for the position of Respected Citizen, Guard, Guard Captain, Judge, Demagague, and Burgess.

Respected Citizen: This position allows you to admit other players as citizens of your town. You must mentor another player before running for this position. Requires 10 votes.

Guard: Guards patrol the areas which are under their town's jurisdiction. Guards have the ability to "banish" law-breaking players from their town for 24 in-game hours (about 8 hours in real life). Guards must also attend scheduled guard meetings and make reports for each banishment. Requires political sponsorship from another person in office, 1 term of Respected Citizen, and 25 votes. New guards are also required to pass a simple test administered by a guard captain.

Guard Captains: Guard Captains oversee all the guards of their towns. In addition to patrolling and banishing law-breakers, Guard Captains are responsible for holding guard meetings, keeping the "Exile Board" (Where reports of exiled players are maintained/updated) up to date, and administering guard tests to new guards. This position requires political sponsorship, 4 terms as guard, and 50 votes.

Judge: Judges oversee cases in which there is a dispute. For example, if a guard banishes a player and the player feels they were banished unjustly, the judge will review the evidence (screen shots) and determine if the player was at fault. Judges also oversee the actions of the Guard Captains. This position requires political sponsorship, 4 terms as guard captain, and 100 votes.

Demagogue: Demagogues are responsible for helping to create/pass laws. They can admit citizens and guests to their town, as well as exile law-breakers (exiling is like banishing, except for a much longer period of time). This position requires political sponsorship, 4 terms of respected citizen or 1 previous term of demagogue, and 50 votes.

Burgess: Essentially the highest position, Burgesses are responsible for ensuring the well being of their city. They create/pass laws, sponsor/appoint demagogues, exile/unexile law-breakers, and administer powers to Fair-Marshals. This position requires political sponsorship, 4 terms of demagogue or 1 previous term of burgess, and 200 votes.

Knights: Knights are in charge of handling cases of in-game bug abuse, hacking, etc. I am not positive what powers Knights have, although they have the ability to directly communicate with the GMs (game masters). Knights are appointed by the Rangers/Master Ranger. This position requires that you have had experience as a guard captain and judge.

Rangers: Rangers are essentially mini-GMs. They have the ability to jail players for breaking the game's ToS (Terms of Service). Being jailed leaves a permanent mark on a player's legend (in game profile). Rangers are appointed by the Master Ranger.

Master Ranger: The Master Ranger has the same powers as normal Rangers, with the exception of having the ability to appoint Rangers. The Master Ranger is appointed by the GM.

    ----------

It is getting later here, I will expand upon this tomorrow, as well as go into the religious system and some other things. I apologize if that was poorly written, however; it should give you an idea of the in game political system. Feel free to ask any questions.

There were a lot of MMORPGs before World of Warcraft....

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:MMORPGs_by_year

World of Warcraft came out in 2004. 45 MMORPGs came out before WoW actually, at least. Three of them still well-known: Trickster, Ragnarok and MapleStory. Meridian 59 being the first 3D MMORPG: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meridian_59

Only plays Magic DPS Classes, Healers and Machinist/Engineers.
    Playing MMO: FFXIV (Balmung)
Waiting On: FFXV, KH3, Tree of Savior, RE:FFVII · Saving For: New Computer

It's an interesting looking game, but I don't want to play it right now. I am playing Age of Wushu, Wurm, Eve, and The Secret World. And those are just the MMO's I'm currently playing. I would have been more inclined to play if the political side of things were a bit deeper and/or wide-spread. Two towns seems like it would take a long time and a lot of work to get anywhere, if you ever could. Which can be fun, if you like that sort of thing. But I feel as though the only way I could have fun is if I were to get my guild to go in to the game, infiltrate one of the political towns and then take over. And then it would get boring for me.

Maybe a few months from now when I've stopped playing so many games and can devote more time to it.

It's free until level 99, once you begin end game content - it requires a registration. We're hoping to see it go free to play once the playerbase gets a bit larger and it can support itself with the item shop purchases.

It's originally by Nexon, which has been shining with the free to play model. It'd make quite a bit of sense for the GM to decide on that business model.

Yeah, the biggest issue with the game itself is it is the furthest away from easy for new players. There's no quest arrows, there are no green flashing lights to tell you where to complete a quest. There is no path finder for you to follow to the next NPC.

Which makes you rely on the community even more, which I personally love. There are a few fansites that direct you how to complete quests, but most people would be open to telling you where to go or what to do for quest lines.

The plan for me and battery was to get more people interested in the game or at least get them to give it a try; then possibly open a community ventrilo for newer players to get a grip on where to go and what to do because it's much easier to explain with voice chat than it is typing directions to someone.

Noticed someone else mentioned the nexon thing, sorry I didn't bother to read over everything before posting.
Kind of, you have it a bit reversed. Ownership was kind of between a rock and a hard place for awhile which lead to delayed updates. Nexon wasn't sure if they wanted it anymore, then they sold it to Kru Interactive. Kru Interactive was dependent on receiving updates from Nexon for awhile, but the game evolved quite a bit since that.

Nexon was providing quite a bit of content quickly, but when ownership changed - it was a bit up in the air whether or not the game would continue.

This game reminds me alot of Endless-Online.
The only thing that bugs me about this game is that there's no animation to sit down on the ground, or on chairs etc. I know some people would think that it's pointless.. but to me it's not. I'd like to be able to sit down and just hang out and RP with people.

There's an event item called the "Rest Cloak" that when used, puts your character in one of many different sitting positions (you also regain hp faster while "resting". ^^

I'm online right now. If anyone is thinking about trying out Dark Ages, I am available to help you get started. Just leave a post in this thread with your character name!

That first look video is incredibly biased and quite frankly, terrible. When he bashes the game due to it's graphics before even logging in, you know it's going to be a pretty shitty review.

I'm going to be recording a series of new player video tutorials for Dark Ages in the next few days. I very much believe that one of the reasons new players quit Dark Ages so quickly is because they log in, do the tutorial, and then become lost. I'll admit, the game itself doesn't offer much direction for new players; that's where I plan to come in. I'll link the youtube channel once I get my initial tutorials up. Stay tunned.

By the way, if a moderator from MMOhut reads this, the links in your Dark Ages review section (i got there by going through the game list and click Dark Ages) are all broke. When you click "Create an account" or "Official Site", it blows you off to the wikipedia site for the period in history called "The Dark Ages."

... no wonder people are having a hard time playing the game.
