Default Is ragnarok a truly gripping mmo?

So I have been kinda looking at ragnarok online... I have heard people rave about this game but was always like eh... cuz its graphics were so eh... But I am now finding the graphics to be rather "classic" and kinda like it, but was wondering if anyone could tell me how the game is nowadays... If it is worth getting into?

    Thanks

(and they have a several bard classes Woopie!)

It meets you half way. If you don't like it from the beginning, you'll likely become bored with it later on as well.

It's more of a nostalgia thing nowadays, at least for me. If you didn't play it before, you probably wont be able to get into it now.

Haha, well how is the grouping aspect? Is there tons of stuff to gather bunches of people for and go fight bosses, etc...?

Is their good community aspect to the game?

You probably haven't read the post from much before. Grouping is the reason Ragnarok is so damn fun. So yes to all your questions ( you're probably imaging it worst then it really is) and the community is one of the best i've seen.

What made Ragnarok Online fun, for me, was in the early days. Everyone was all lost in that game. No one knew what to do, where to go, or how to level up properly. Most people were most helpful towards each other. (that by itself would make any game fun ) Then people you run into try group up and try to fight harder monsters. After many trials and errors and countless wipes and getting lost and so on, people learned how to play RO, and along the way, they made friends.

Unfortunately, most of these aspects are long gone. You can still find them, or at least some of these aspects, if you join a good and friendly guild. Otherwise, it's all gone.

Well you can still experience that old RO experience. I usually do it by getting some friends together who haven't seen RO and then show them the game. :-)

I don't think you understand, single player = the new MMOs. Quest hubs everyone, all grinding is just instances. The closest you get to the old times is that rare social guild where there's barely any competition.

But yeah, Phenoca is right. There weird thing about RO is that most of the original players that still play don't play the offical server. If you were to go on a low rate cough cough, you would see how kind they are still. WoW defiantly screwed up the whole MMO universe.

whenever there is RO, there will be Rya and Aimee

yeah. it's true that the generic RO experience won't be as good as it used to be. though joining TI parties is a real blast. feels like the old school RO i was looking for. it's really fun there.
teaching new players in the game is really fun too. i find myself laughing whenever a novice i've been helping randomly stabs a peco peco and gets creamed. even if i told him not to touch any of the mobs. they just stab out of curiosity. LOL

Lol I see... So if I were to pick the game up to try out... Do I want the international server... or definitely a cough cough?

But the community and overall game seems like ffxi! Where the community is still very nice, close knit, and very helpful. And where you need people's help to progress through the game because quests and what not are not laid out for you in black and white and tasks can be quite difficult (even though there is the internet now to find quests :P).

Not to compare the two... but it seems like they kinda follow the same sort of structure to build a community amongst gamers that play.

All I'll say on the matter is that both are different experiences with their own share of major problems. Both can be fun though.

I think quite a number of RO players will tell you that they're still gaming with their old RO guildmates in other, newer games, even 7-8 years down the road.

Shows you how close knit the RO community was.

If you are new to RO you are better off playing on official servers first. That's mainly because private servers have too money customs that ruin the game for new players (they are designed for players who know the game by heart).

Sometimes a good "other server" pops up, but you need to be familiar with RO first before you are able to even tell that. So for a starter, go official servers.

    I agree with this completely.

But it's not impossible to get into RO now adays, just do not go to the official servers. You want to find a low-rate private server that has just started up. The people you meet there will become life long friends, and you'll have ton of people to help you. Choose wisely, because you don't want to invest and settle down on a low-rate that never expands and advertises and gains interest.

But defiantly if you're new and you want the RO experience everyone raves about; you must Avoid the official servers and Join a New Low rate server. Look for a low rate that minimizes on customs and doesn't have a cash shop.

i had tons of fun playing RO back in '01 up til '07... yeap those were the good ol' days :3

i especially loved WoE!.. my main was a healer so i'd be buffing everyone, throwing heals, using stat recovery for frozen/stunned people and cure for silenced ones hahahha. gaad! had to do lots of things. i am totally missing it right now @@

after RO i just went to WoW in '07 and have stopped from time to time when i've reached end-game content and would just wait for the next xpac :P
