Your best bet is to if you were to root your phone and flash a light-weight ROM,A-Developers.com is a great place to start.
I'd suggest reading up on rooting and the potential hazards before jumping in and doing anything.
I personally rooted all of my Android devices as I'm a serial flasher(in more ways then one).
