    Default Entropia Universe?

I tried playing Entropia Universe's Planet Calypso a few years ago but never really got started. It seems slightly interesting but is it actually good?
What can you do for fun?
Do you need to invest lots of money?
(I read that building a house would cost around $900.)

Play it either as an economy simulator or as gambling with laser rifles.
If you want to do the former you could come a long way with just 20$. You'll skill up and break even by planning and trading.
In the latter case you're gambling. You could spend 1$ a day or put a month's salary on the line.

You gain more than your loss if you play smart.

this is not the game to play mindlessly or drunk.. best to stay away from it tbh

Since real money is at stake if you want to play you'd best start reading guides and learning the most efficient ways of doing things. The more trial and error experiences you can bypass, the more money you'll save.
