    Default RIFT F2P Discussion

    RIFT goes free-to-play ! ! !

Trion Worlds has just announced that fantasy MMO RIFT will be headed free-to-play. Though former studio reps were once adamant that the game would remain a subscription MMO, the team has apparently decided it can better compete in a F2P world by being F2P. The hybrid model will include an optional sub with fully free content like dungeons and questing; consumables, cosmetics, and even gear will make up the cash shop.

We asked Creative Director Bill Fisher to explain the whys and wherefores of this decision. Check out our interview after the jump!

Massively: Why is it time for RIFT to go free-to-play? Are subscribers dropping? Did the expansion not do well? Does your market research see better profit potential in F2P? Or is it perhaps a combination of the above or something different entirely?

Bill Fisher: We have been seeing feedback on this subject since the inception of the game -- and not in a negative light. We have received all kinds of in-game feedback reports, passionately written emails, and gathered data from exit surveys over the years. This was one of the most requested, if not the most requested, feature from the community.

We know that the business landscape has changed over the years. In the old days you could pay for these sorts of games by the hour. I don't think anyone reading this really wants to go back to those days.

We've had this in the works for quite some time -- and you could see some of the original inkling of this with the RIFT Lite program, which was a smashing success for us. There has certainly been a stigma over the years regarding free-to-play games, but that stigma is going away every day as more top quality games are released with quality F2P models that don't gouge the user but instead provide fun environments and good value.

Did Defiance's launch and business model cause Trion to re-evaluate RIFT's model?

No, the RIFT team has been looking at this sort of model for quite some time.

Former executive producer Scott Hartsman was vocal in his support of the subscription model for RIFT. Did the studio want to go F2P for a while now but was holding back due to Hartsman's leadership?

No one at Trion ever tried to hold us back as we started investigating a free-to-play model for RIFT last year. It's been really positive every step of the way.

The biggest requirement with this change is that we had to come up with a model that fit RIFT and that gave real value to our users when they decided to spend their hard-earned cash. I think what we are offering is pretty amazing.

Free-to-play didn't help RIFT to survive in Korea, and Chinese media reports that it's having a rough time there as well. Is this a worry for the rest of the world, or do you see the Western market as more accommodating for F2P?

We have built a free-to-play model that we feel is great for the users that we know best: the Western market. Our market isn't necessarily any more or less accommodating than others. Doing a conversion like this and doing it right really comes down to knowing your market and how people interact with your game.

So break it down for us: What will the free portion of RIFT's F2P include, and what will be monetized?

All of our content is available completely for free: every quest, every chronicle, every dungeon, every continent, every level, and every raid. You can level to 60 without spending a dime. You can earn the best gear in the game without giving us a credit card. No tricks; no traps.

The RIFT Store will have a variety of boosts available to increase your XP gain or token gain -- but these are just accelerations of things you can already earn. We will also be offering mounts, costumes, treasure boxes, storage space, more role slots, more wardrobe slots, and a slew of services.

We will also have gear for sale. Our guidelines for gear on the store are generally as follows: The best gear in the game must be earned and high-level items on the store must also be available to be earned in-game.

Will there still be a subscription option? Will there be additional incentives to subscribe if so?

We are renaming our subscription option to Patron status. Patrons will receive a variety of benefits including daily boosts they can activate as well as convenience features such as summoning trainers, bankers, guild bankers, and more.

It feels as though RIFT's once-legendary speedy updates have slowed down as of late. What does the near future look like for RIFT's development aside from F2P?

We've been working on Update 2.3: Empyreal Assault alongside our transition to free-to-play. This patch has a ton of content. We are finally unlocking the Dendrome (full of new level 60 quests), as well as adding new dynamic content known as Strongholds, a new Chronicle, a new 10-player Sliver, and even open-world raid bosses.

Getting everything lined up for 2.3 has been quite task. Folks are already starting work on 2.4, which includes two new 20-player raids and much more. In other words, we are still going to be cranking out content! We want to keep adding content and systems to keep the game fresh and keep people interested.

For those not playing RIFT right now, what's the best reason to give this game a shot when it goes free-to-play?

RIFT is hands down the best MMO that you have never played. If you don't want a complete AAA MMO experience for free, then I can't help you.

FOR ALL THAT DONT KNOW ,RIFT GOT A F2P Lite version up to Level 20,EVERYONE CAN CHECK THE GAME NOW

    UPDATE

REX is a middle-man currency that is purchased with real money and can then be converted into item store credits (although, as the post states, it's a better deal to directly buy the credits). The twist here is that before it's converted to credits, REX can be sold to other players on the auction house. This effectively gives players with in-game money ways to obtain store credits and players with excess real money ways to inflate their in-game piggy banks.

I don't like this trend of sub-based MMOs going F2P. I mean sure, its cool you dont have to pay.
But it just proves that a sub-based MMO is going to ruins and isn't doing any good anymore.
I miss the times where sub-based MMO's could survive for longer than they do now.

Will never happen, they would lose more money than they would gain doing that

Anyways Rift isn't worth the time IMO.

It'll happen eventually, either WoW will become F2P or "Project Titan" will.

I like RIFT, just wish it was an action-oriented MMORPG.

so.. how is pvp in Rift like?

i did actually watch a friend play rift once. nice crisp detailed gfx but i didn't like the artwork hugely. i think it was action combat.
The pvp is pretty sweet.Being an archer class based soley on damage I always sniped enemy healers/archers to give my team the upper hand.Idk if it was meant that way but when I would pvp I would always think tactics which is rare.Being able to make your very own build using three different souls is fun also.So much tweaking so little time x.x

It wasn't that bad.It was pretty fast at least better than those mmos where in order to cast a skill/spell you have to be rooted to that one spot.Because walking while chanting a spell is complicated as hell right?

heck, even the generic dungeons are fun because they have amazing scenery.

i got the entire game for free from raptr, so i hope you get special benefits from owning the game.
Indeed rift is super solid, fun for both pve and pvp+solid character customization.
I'll be going back for sure, I myself mentioned one of the reasons for quitting ~8 months ago was solely the subscribtion being as high as it was. Where as there are months were I can say spend $15 on LoL, all of that is permanent and if I don't use it right away it doesn't go away or have to be replaced by another $15 the coming month.

Truly suggest Rift to anyone looking for a solid mmo, especially if you like having a lot of customization with character.

Most probably part of why is because it was made by a great company.

Great news. RIFT is definitely among the best F2P games out there along with this new transition. Definitely going to make a return to the game.

**** YEAH! This is great news. I've been waiting for this for a long time. RIFT has the best PvE content out of all the games I have played. This is coming from a person who is generally turned off by the PvE treadmill and who has played A LOT of games. I have a lvl capped Cleric (mostly focusing on a Purifier tree). The dungeons at endgame were incredibly challenging and fun. The bosses had a lot of difficult mechanics to learn, on top of that you had to manage your cooldowns very effectively. There was never a dull moment. The dungeons did not feel like a treadmill grind because of how challenging they were. All this comes from my experience during the first few months of Open Beta so I don't know how much the game has changed and to what end.

The PvP is meh... It is on par with WoW PvP. The build diversity adds a lot to the PvP scene. The devs do listen to community feedback and rebalance soul trees accordingly which is nice to see, this is a feature shared by all good games, and is a sign of polish. The PvP is not as good as Warhammer PvP or GW2 PvP. I preferred the artstyle of Warhammer, that game imo has the most Orcish looking Orc race out of any game in the fantasy genre.

I hope Warhammer goes F2P next. Fingers crossed.

Playing against AI only gets so fun. The rush of playing competitively against other players with a brain is more fun.

My grades will be taking a massive hit this year. xD

I cant wait for the transition. Definitely one of the best, and most welcomed, additions to the f2p genre. I will probably be losing sleep. Only downside is it is going to happen after my vacation and not during :P

It has one of the better endgames actually, it's just getting to that point that becomes a pain. Also I forgot I still had Rift installed so I'm just wondering which shard are you guys gonna be playing on?

Does PvP shard mean open world pvp? If so, I'll def. be on the north american pvp shard

EDIT: class system looks really really nice. Hopefully it is somewhat balanced though

I'm probably going to just pick subclasses/souls without looking at guides (just gonna base it on what I think is cool)

How big is Rift fully installed and doesn't this game have expansions for it, how are they going to handle those for f2p (if it doesn't then ignore this last part).
