A smartphone in general is very convenient to have with or without service. Gaming, ebooks, web, music, directions, bus schedules, GPS, weather, nfc credit cards, camera, video recording, video conferencing and chatting, social networking contacts and yellow, pages, movie tickets, e tickets, cabs, food and news all in your hand.I'm not buying a cell phone until they operate via free public VOIP hubs, or I get married. Majority of that is done with just 1 app. Now that I think about it, it's no wonder that I feel so disconnected when I don't have my phone on me.

There are apps about that will encrypt your phone calls and texts.
It may not be 100% effective but if they're going to read your stuff at least make it difficult for them.

I don't think they read everyone's phone calls. I think the purpose of this action is because they are tracking malicious activities of certain dangerous people.

Don't be so naive.
Even if its only the press and the opposition and dissidents of any sort are who interest them, if there is no more journalists and civil rights activists and opposition politicians, that will make your life miserable enough.
Of course they won't harm you. You have value as a labor drone after all, if you are fit for that sort of work.
