Default What entices you to a fansite?

I'm trying to figure something out. There's this game that you are very interested in playing. It's in alpha testing and you want early access to it. The official website has a forum that already has discussion posts on it. What sorts of things would make you join a fansite based on the game? I'm trying to figure out the psychology on how fansites get people if the official game forums already has people on it.

I'd have to be really into the game and actually want to talk to others about it or talk to devs in some way shape or form through it. Then again most games with a fan site unless they get super popular die out relatively fast.

    News, unofficial guides, good community.

mmo-champion (which is pretty much a wow fan site these days) does it well.

Finding faster ways to complete quests, planning my character build, researching item prices, researching crafting requirements, networking with players in my guild (guild events/recruitment), applying to guilds, finding-out whether the game is worth playing (e.g. reading reviews on PvP-system or combat-system), finding where to loot an item, and trolling other players. When I am playing ANY game I visit their wiki a few times per day. If it's Entropia I check for item production-costs and supply vs demand, if it's League of Legends I check for spellcasting range and cooldowns, if it's Runescape I check for production vs sale costs and the fastest way to reach dungeons.

I think Quest Guides are a big asset to fansites.
