I sort of agree and sort of don't.

Sure, he made a joke. There's a point where jokes stop though and his comment is past that line. You'd also get in trouble for that sort of jokes in Europe too.
Death threats (which that joke kind of is) are always taken seriously by anyone of 18 years of older. In certain cases they are even taken seriously from ages 12 and up.

I'd like to point that every freedom has and always will have it's limits because quite honestly, most people can't handle true freedom sadly.

Dude threatened to shoot up a school on a public forum in a time when our nation is super sensitive towards things like that. I'm not saying he deserves jail time, but he did something really really stupid and now he's facing the consequences. Think before you act.
