Personally I would save it for one of the upcoming titles: Wildstar, Blade and Soul, Phantasy Star Online 2, Elder Scrolls Online, or Archeage.

Probably the best idea as of now, some of those titles look really interesting

Define cheap though because I'm still honestly not sure if going F2P is what would have been better than it being P2P and getting access to everything. PSU was like less than 10$ a month at one point with the additional days they added to the subs. How much is the premium service for PSO2 and how long does it last?

Didn't they mention stuff like extra character slots and something about an extended or secondary skill slots requiring payment though? Not to mention that some costumes, though can be traded, are only gotten initially through gacha? If I were in a situation were I had gotten 500$ I'd probably use it on that stuff is what I mean. I usually give out stuff to people too so it's not like I'd be spending the whole 500$ on myself.

And if PSO2 is good, I wouldn't mind spending 500$ on it over the course of what I hope to be is like 3-4 years to maintain premium status + maybe a few extra stuff here and there.

PSO2 is pretty much PSO2. As in, it's that good.
Yes, all costumes are gotten through gacha - but it is easier to just purchase them with meseta from the auction house.
I think MyShop pass is 7 bux, and if you want premium (myshop, myroom, premium blocks, trading, 300 slot storage) it's 16 bux.
gacha is 2 or 6 bux per attempt.
but then again, jp have stupid cashshop prices, doubt we'll see the same prices over here.
