You do realize we just didn't plop into the water and learned to breath underwater right? Especially with normal DNA development?
Such a process takes at least a couple of thousands of years. Chances are that if he developed that disease when we were living in caves, he either would've been killed or left to die in the wild.

There is no real existence of mermaids either or we would've found them ages ago.

Try millions of years.
Thousands of years is way to short a period of time for such a thing to occur in a general population of animals.
