Or is it gone?
I mostly play female characters in anime-style MMORPG, since I feel like Anime-style is better suited for females than males.
However, in terms of Western MMORPGs I usually play male characters.

Yeah there is. But I wouldn't call it a ''stigma''. Some people think its weird, some don't. Who cares what they think. Do what you want.
Reputation: 482It still is, but only because people still associate their real identities with their ingame ones. I personally play an equal amount of both so I'm used to it.
The real question is, "Do you care?". The only thing I care about is if the person playing, knows how to play. That's all I've ever cared about.
I play both, just usually go by who looks better in the games armours/clothes xD

no this again ... only time i had a male character was in WoW as Draenei shaman because shoulders looks cool when they are big... never had a male character in any other mmo... except if its gender locked.
Some Stories Are Just Way Better In My Head!
Reputation: 490Usually I play a male character, but when I play an MMO and I figure I wont play it long I will sometimes make a female character. However, this sometimes comes back to bite me (in Dragon's Prophet and Wurm Online, for example) and I end playing the game a lot and my main character is a female.
I find that, unless I encourage it, most people figure I'm a guy to begin with and treat me as such. There's definitely a few people here and there that treat me a bit odd until I tell them I'm a guy or they hear me in VOIP. I've seen some people go from White Knights to white supremacy racists in a matter of moments. But most people just don't give a shit. I've never had anyone that I actually play with (IE friends and guildies) complain about me playing female characters, and I've never complained about a guy playing a female character either.
I do give people a choice, though. Some people just want to be the other gender so they'll play the other gender. If these people tell me that they're the gender that they're playing, I will treat them as such, even if I know they're really a guy. Most of the time, this just means I'll call them a her/she instead of a he/him, or vice versa.
Generally, unless it's just someone trolling, a majority of gamers don't give a flying **** what you are, what you're playing, what you like, etc... as long as you're not being an ass hole.
couple stories about me playing female characters:
Everquest: when i used to play i played with an RP group, female high elf mage. the group knew i was a guy(as i told them when they asked) and some guy came up to me with basically "leave these nerds and come hop in my car." but ruder and about the game. usual tough guy stuff.
the group was laughing and encouraged me, i was too busy laughing as the guy described what he would do to me(or more hopefully my character). i finally speak up and tell him that i am in fact male. he pulls out the "eww ur gay fayget." and i lost it right there.
Aion: Playing a female scout, just minding my own business and 4 people show up and start talking to me, being a nice guy i chat with em and they give me free shit, never asked for it. i told em not to bother with the free stuff, i prefer to earn my own. finally someone asked me, are you male or female. i told em i was male, to the response of "you coulda fooled me, you type very femininely" i wasn't sure how i should take that.
Moral of the story: i don't think it's a big deal. as the character is not you, but just that, a character to be played.
I didn't even ever know there was an issue with this. Then again I just assume everyone has a penis.
Doesn't matter to me one way or the other. Just play what you want. I usually only stick to male characters but thats just because I relate more to them myself and enjoy playing masculine characters. Then again it doesn't matter if I play a gender locked game like say Vindictus so meh.
Reputation: 43I don't think so, but when i play a female character some times people seem to think i'm a girl. Not because i act like one, but i guess because of the way i type sometimes, i didn't even think it'd be possible for people to come to that conclusion. Funny thing is though, i tend to get more friend invites and such when i'm playing a male character.
Also This will probably seem weird, but i like to dress female characters up......Don't know when the hell i decided i liked doing that though, which is why i tend to play female characters in Asian MMOs. Alot of male outfits look like shit most of the time anyway. Hell alot of them look like shit in most mmorpgs
