Default F2P and P2P Thesis research

    Hello everyone,
I’m doing a research on loyalty in MMORPGs for a thesis. This would include a survey on people that like to play MMORPGs. The survey is just 20 simple questions; if you could just take 2 minutes from your grinding hobby it would really help me and improve games

    Link to survey:

    Thanks!

    Answered.

Some questions were fairly hard to answer for me.

If prefer F2P payment model over P2P mostly because in a P2P payment model I feel forced to play "since I've paid for it" and that ruins my enjoyment when playing.

I actually very rarely buy cash shop items, but I occassionally pay 5€-10€ for something like a permanent inventory size expansion. I only buy cash shop items if both is true: 1) I think the game is really good and 2) The item seems useful in some way (e.g. I don't buy purely cosmetical items, but I do buy access to extra content, permanent inventory size expansions as well as permanent equips with stats that I need and can't get ingame).

There are plenty F2P MMORPGs for which I never paid a cent for because I realized they suck very early on already.

By far my favorite payment model however is B2P.

The problem of P2P I mentioned above. The problem of F2P games is that they are often designed intentionally worse to force you to pay to actually enjoy them more. A big flaw is for example player vs. monster balance. A well designed game is always challenging but possible. In F2P MMORPGs they usually make it so that it starts of easy (no challenge, boring), so that even the worst players can get into it and then eventually get so hard that it's hard for you to even defeat a single monster alone without buying some boosters in the cash shop. Plus the community is often better in P2P and B2P MMORPGs.

So in the end the B2P model is the best as it has the good of both sides:
You don't feel forced to play the game because your time is unlimited and you can just play later if you don't feel like it now AND the game is better designed.

What was hard to answer for me was more about friends and stuff. I always get friends to play with me as I don't really enjoy playing alone too much. Once I have a good group going, it's also fairly easy for me to make friends ingame. I don't think this has anything to do with the payment model at all, though.
When my friends leave, I'd usually leave too, but since I should only refer the answers to my favorite MMORPG, I must say, I'd never leave it no matter what friends do. Worst case I take a 2 year break from it, but I'll always come back.
