Default When there's no money left in hell, games shall rise from the dead.

So seems like the western MMORPG industry is in a state of extreme hibernation. Even the most promising titles can barely stay profitable here. MOBAs are growing like the post-WoW infestation of copies all over again. Free to play titles that defaulting on buy to play business models (good write-up on it here from Tagspeech: http://www.onrpg.com/articles/editor...siness-models/) akin to how the subscription titles defaulted to free to play models in the past years to stay afloat.

So with it no longer profitable to produce and localize/publish these games in the west (sure it's sustainable for devs that really love their job, but there isn't enough money to attract outside investors unfamiliar with the industry much longer), do you think we're in for the era of Subagames? Aka zombie games. The same rehashed MMOs long dead, rising from the grave with scarcely any new content? And those desperate enough to live in the nostalgia of the once thriving MMO industry will crawl back to them and spend money again?

What's your predictions on the MMO industry for North America and Europe in the next 5 years? It's October so feel free to be as scary and negative as you'd like

And if you can be positive after seeing a game like this is releasing in EU by Nexon in 2014 well, you've got one impressive optimistic streak in ya.

We've been in the zombie dayz (my attempt at a joke) ever since DayZ blew up a couple years back. Not so much in mmorpg's, but practically every game since has had some sort of zombie element or mode. (I guess Call of Duty: World at War started the craze but DayZ really blew it up)

Future Scenario 1: Blizzard releases "Zombie WoW" and everyone returns to WoW.
Future Scenario 2: WoW finally dies, killing the whole mmorpg genre with it.
Future Scenario 3: Asia invades Europe...with 'f2p' cash shop P2W games. (Wait...I think this is already happening)
Future Scenario 4: Gamers gravitate towards indie mmorpgs...that mostly aren't massive and mostly don't live long beyond their initial hype. (Also kinda already happening)
Future Scenario 5: OnRPG the RPG is released.

Wow 2 predictions for OnRPG the RPG already. I better incorporate my own LLC in preparation for the inevitable day.

To be fair, in the case of western MMOs it is mostly the devs fault when they end up failing (hi wildstar nice knowing ya).
In the case of asian MMOs it's mostly the publishers fault and their superior greed (hi lostsaga you need more publishers).

I don't think it's a matter of which market is more profitable, it's the fact that they haven't found a way to exploit this one.

SEGA will finally decide to get off their asses and publish PSO2 in the West. Tree of Saviour will be released in the West, and it will be glorious. ArcheAge will start to decline, as will Black Gold, Blade and Soul, RIFT, AIKA, AION. More people using MOBAs for PVP, rather than MMORPGs, making MMORPGs go back to being mostly PVE. Bless will finally release in the west, and be mostly PVE after a major re-write. EverQuest Next will release, and be better than the previous entries combined, making it the most played free-to-play MMORPG for at least 5 Years.

Those are my predictions for the next 2-3 years.

Only plays Magic DPS Classes, Healers and Machinist/Engineers.
    Playing MMO: FFXIV (Balmung)
Waiting On: FFXV, KH3, Tree of Savior, RE:FFVII · Saving For: New Computer

Yeah the combination of publisher BS and people not wanting to break the mold(or when they do, more publisher BS)

    Never ever
SEGA literally hates money. I'm not even kidding.
They're capcom and Squeenix, there's mega profits and failure
    No in between.
Profitable but just not the next WoW/FF__?
    Not a thing.

I feel, currently, licensing is what's keeping the good games coming. NA seems to always be one of the last ones to ever get a game and it's because of licensing. Developers are even working on English versions of their game WHILE they develop their original language (Tree of Savior and BDO), but we never see testing start because there's legal hurdles.

Then once the game comes out, the publishers are either pushed to be greedy (OGPlanet with some titles I enjoyed), they are greedy them self (Nexon), or they're just idiots (insert company here). I honestly don't see bad titles, I just see bad execution.

As for rising from the dead, I've never had an experience where a game came back and I liked it again, but that's just me. I do think that developers and publishers need to sit down and think about how they're releasing and handling games though.

I predict the rise of hybrid MOBA-MMORPGs. Like LoL with a quest mode.

The MMORPG market will almost entirely die out because companies are constantly recycling mechanics and concepts from other MMOs and all the developers are too afraid to step out of the generic MMORPG box. I see Runescape and WoW being the only two to survive but the playerbase will be cut by 50% or more.

Tell that to all my fired associates in the PR game. :eagle:

He isn't saying it's going to die out entirely. Just go through the stage console gaming did prior to the rise of Mario and nintendo.

What I mean is look back years ago at how many mmorpgs on the market. That number is always increasing year on year.

I agree with this, regardless of what anyone says WoW and League are bringing more people into the PC market. Which indirectly will introduce them to other online games. I think console games are going alittle stale currently, but MMOs have been getting a lot of publicity. 5 years before, if I told someone I play online games they'd ask, "Why?" Now they just ask "Which one?"

We can't entirely blame NA for this non sense, Snail games is an example. Snail games is publishers for NA and Asia Wushu. Both greedy as ever.

As for what I think currently, I think when AAA titles stop being the next new thing. And more of the Next best thing we'll see another large increase in publicity for the MMO market. A good example of this is FFXIV, The game is good and holds a stable player base. It's also well known for it's crafting. Did it do anything to realistically go above and beyond. No, it's generic. Is it good at what it does, yes. It's arguably what new games should be.

I personally believe Archeage will die down and become anther GW2 or worst. Anyone remember the hype behind gw2, lol.

More MMORPGS doesn't equal more players... Runescape used to have 250k+ on simultaneously and now it barely manages 80k at peak times, if that. WoW's community has completely died out from what it used to be back in Vanilla and pre-Cataclysm especially. ArcheAge is essentially dying out really quickly right now, all the hype has died because people are realizing that's it's not even remotely as good as anticipated. And the majority of other MMOs aside from a few (PoE, Tera, etc.) have a small player base.
