Father.IO is a up-and-coming augmented reality mobile-game currently in a crowd-funding period. Their goal is $250,000 and it appears they're doing their crowd-funding through their own website. Their goal is to turn the world into a First-person shooter by having people participate in a "hidden war" of sorts. I'm guessing (hoping, really) that the backstory will be similar to that of Ingress - secret societies & factions, cryptic messages, etc... Basically making it into an Augmented reality, alternate reality game.
The concept it offers isn't a unique one, but this is the first time that I have heard anything about the concept becoming real. A major problem with turning the concept real is that, though we do have some powerful cameras on phones nowadays, it's not quite enough to make things accurate enough. Father.IO's answer to this is a separate device that attaches to your phone called a "trigger" that has some extra equipment on it to make things more realistic and accurate.
This video shows a sort of tech demo, showing that the technology does exist. And, while it's not quite impressive yet, I can see some sort of promise there. Hopefully the video feed we see in the demo isn't representative of what the real game would look like, simply because the demo version looks shit.
