Basements are probably a fraction more popular due to most of the buildings being based on really old buildings with storm cellars.

I live in a home from the 1800s and we yet to find the celler. We know there is one as almost if all homes from that time period had one but i think ours if buried

I live in Minnesota which is apart of the Midwest, I was raised in Missouri however and basements are very common.
