Had no idea until recently. Pretty similar to titles like Pirates of the Burning Crusade and Uncharted Waters Online. The biggest differences being that it's still in Early Access/Alpha and so is still missing features (or the features in the game are a WIP) and the game looks about ten thousand times better than any other Age of Sail MMO. And it has accurate damage models/physics/weather effects/etc... Essentially, it's a "Next Gen" Age of Sail game.
Features (as they stand):
-Overworld - huge and detailed map with tons of ports that can be captured by factions, have outposts set up upon them, stuff like that.
-Basics of crafting - use resources bought from ports to craft components to further craft equipment and/or ships.
-Basics of player economy - Currently, Ports produce goods by themselves, but it's up to players to distribute them and make things with them.
-Conquest - Currently several factions (Great Britain, Spain, France, United States, Neutral, Pirates, and more)
-Group play - Join groups with friends, participate in large battles (both organized via in-game event system, or spontaneous player-created events... such as when someone makes an attempt at port conquest.
Coming soon:
-Ability to build things in ports/outposts... I imagine that these will be resource producing facilities and similar things.
-Better group features... within the next week or so, they plan to make it so rewards from missions are fairly distributed between all group members... right now it's essentially take turns completing missions with only one person (the quest taker) getting the "big reward." Though you still get experience, gold, and loot for having participated in combat.
