The Red Baron!

Manfred von Richthofen, aka the Red Baron, Der Rote Kampfflieger, the Red Battle Flyer. Born the son of a Prussian nobleman, he started as a cavalry officer and rose to become the greatest fighter pilot in history. In his time nobody shot down more enemy pilots (80 confirmed kills, with potentially dozens more uncomfirmed). Despite his ruthless reputation, Richthofen was a man of honor in a war in which honor could get you killed - he refused to leave combat until his countrymen were pulled out of the trenches and he sent cigars to those who managed to escape combat with him alive. It is also significant that while Richthofen's early victories and the establishment of his reputation coincided with a period of German air superiority, the majority of his successes were achieved against a numerically superior enemy who were flying fighter planes that were on the whole better than his own.

When he died he was given a hero's burial by his enemies; such was the respect he commanded - and he did it all with just 24 hours of training and in planes that by today's standards would be called flying deathtraps.
